I was on Celebrex 200mg daily. It really helped me but I had to stop
because it bothered my stomach even though I take Prevacid.
My doctor said I could try Relafen which he said is supposed to be
gentler on the stomach. Everything I read contradicts that.
I'm going to try it but I wondered what others have found.
I was also thinking about trying 100mg of Celebrex instead of the 200.

Your Dr probably means gentler than other traditional NSAIDs (non
cox-2), but sometimes NSAIDs are just trial and error. You try them
until you find one that works and has the least side effects. Naprosyn
hurt my stomach but ibuprofen doesn't, others find just the opposite.
Good luck you might ask for samples and see how it goes.

Actually he said it was more gentle on the stomach than Celebrex.

Just a by the way.
I have been taking diclofenac (retard) for about 20 odd years. Now and
again I got gut problems. I was reading and ARC article recently and
noticed a recommendation for aceclofenac (Preservex) as an alternative
to COX2s. I have been taking it for a couple of weeks. Pain control is
about the same as diclofenac and so far my gut has been good.

Well I would be confused also! You might ask him about it next time.
My Dr is cautious about vaccines, yet everyone else says get a flu
shot. I guess every Dr has their own theories and sometimes it is
tough to sort out sometimes.

Hi!
I just switched from Relafen to Arthrotec because the Relafen was doing a
number on my stomach. Arthrotec is diclofenac and a stomach protectant. It's
OK; doing the job of reducing inflammation, but still upsets my stomach
some. I can't take Celebrex because it's a sulfa derivative; an allergy
issue for me.
When I was on the Relafen, I was on the lowest dose and taking both
Ranatidine and Protonix. With the switch to arthrotec, I dropped the
Protonix as its not really for maintenance use.
Many docs are gun shy with Celebrex as it seems all the cox-2's have some
affect on cardio system in a small percentage of the population. They just
don't know who will be in that percentage, yet.

Relafen did a number on my stomach too when I was on it. At first I thought
it was a stomach virus because the trouble didn't start until 6 weeks after
switching to it when they took Bextra off the market). Nausea and major gas
- of course I'd go off my meds for a couple of days when I got sick, but each
time I went back on it the side effects occured faster and were stronger. By
the last day I took it for good, the gas was so bad I slept on the couch to
spare my DH!
It's possible that you wouldn't have trouble with relafen, but thhe incidence
of these side effects is high enough that I would think someone who is prone
to stomach trouble should be wary. I wonder if he maybe got confused with
another med - even good docs do that once in a while.

It's trial and error. Sometimes, 1 nsaid won't cause any problems while
another will.
Are you taking anything to protect your stomach? If not, I would check into
that especially since you're having problems already.

Relafin was good for my joint condition; however, it gave me SERIOUSLY
bad mouth sores.
I used nexium and more often than not - the meds cause sore mouth.
