Hello,

I have just been diagnosed with "sudden onset arthrits" aka "robust
arthritis" aka Rheumatoid arthrits.  There seems to be a plethora of info on
the internet.  I am wondering if anyone here knows of truly good,
informational sites.  My hands are affected and back at the moment, so I do
not have the stamina to wade through it all.  I thought perhaps someone here
might be compassionate enough to steer to me toa couple of links.

My maternal great grandmother had it, my grandmother was diagnosed when she
was 49 and her sisters also had it - one became wheelchair bound in her
20's. I understand it more common in women, not hereditary or genetic but
does tend to _cluster_ in families.  A  lot of blood tests are being run to
make sure there isn't an underlying illness mimicking RA.  During this time
I was given a cortsione cocktail shot - short acting and long acting
cortisone that did wonders.  I had been in tears from the intense pain,
stiffening making things worse. I initially took the conservative approach
with ibuprofen for the swelling, but stomach could not handle it.  I take a
water pill daily to release what has been called "non-specfic edema".   I am
already on sustained release morphine for another chronic pain condition,
but even it did not touch the arthritic pain.  Until all tests are in I will
continue to recieve the cortisone shots, if needed, over the next 2 weeks
and I have been given the green light to use my breakthrough medication to
help the pain as well. I did not so without talking with the doctor first.

New teritory for me and I do much better the more knowledge I have.  So far
I have been told to total rest until this _flare_ subsides.  I am looking
into dietary changes based on what little research I have done.  Exercise, a
staple, I cannot do at this time because of the other problem.  Easing into
exercise will most likely require a PT so as to help the RA but avoid
stressing the other site.  This will be quite difficult to accomplish.

Hoping someone here can point me to some decent links.

Thanks so much.

Welcome though not glad you have the occasion to become part of our group.
I am not going to make this long as hands hurting from a flare but there are
plenty of folks here who can set you off in the right direction and all of
us can listen if you have to rant, rave, moan or whine--we
understand--and--if you have chocolate--I have the official chocolate
vault--protects your precious chocolate from chocoholics who would
pillage....Sounds like you have a thorough doc--hang in there

Hi Mary Beth etc.

I just found this site today and haven't fully checked it out yet.  But, I
have been going to another site for about a year and I can vouch for that one-
-it's just great.  You can look around and read all the posts without
registering, and if you're interested then you can sign up and post.  To get
to the discussion board there:

www.arthritisfoundation.org
communities
RA Connect
Discussion
then choose Rheumatoid Arth. from the drop down menu.

The rest of the site also has good info on RA.

You are so wise to do all you can to learn about RA.  When you understand the
disease and the drugs, it's not as scary and that will help you deal with it.
Plus, it will help you know when something is out of the ordinary and
requires a call to your doc or some other action on your part.  It also will
help keep you away from the snake oil salesmen trying to sell you an "instant
cure".  It will even help you to deal with well meaning relatives and friends
who will pass on the lastest cure info they've heard--gin soaked raisins,
eating or not eating this or that etc.  Get info on meds from sites like this
but always always consult your doc before trying or discontinuing any meds.

The first year of this is the worst.  Trying to learn about it, adjusting to
the changes in your life, trying meds and switching from one to another to
find what works etc can be very emotional and painful.  Remember there are
lots of us who know how you feel.  I don't know why that helps so much, but
even after 9 years of RA, it felt so good when I found a site filled with
warm hearted people who really know what it's like.

Good luck to you.

Alix--LOL, Altho' chocolate won't cure this, I'm pretty sure that several
medical associations are on the verge of listing it as a treatment.  Seems it
makes an awful lot of people feel better.  I bet you'd be one of the first to
volunteer to participate in that study!

Thank you all.  I will eagerly begin my research.  Already a well meaning
family member (my daughter no less!) has hit me with the "no starch" diet.
Sigh.  When this flare subsides I will be jumping in feet first!

Sorry you need to be here!   Here are a few links for your viewing
pleasure:
http://www.arthritis.co.za/Default.htm
This site is by Dr Doc  he is a Rheumatologist in South Africa and a
really nice guy.  He used to post on this forum, and very occasionally
does check in.  Probably one of the best resources on the web.  This
is a huge site.
http://www.rheumatology.org/
American College of Rheumatology.  If you nose around this site you
will find abstracts from much of the newest research.  They have a
diagnostic tree for treatment of RA and they have the diagnosis
criteria for RA and other Rheumatic diseases.  Some of the site is for
Drs only.   If your Dr is a Rheumatologist he/she is a member of this
organization.
http://www.hopkins-arthritis.som.jhmi.edu/
Excellent site from John Hopkins, much current research and a whole
section on treatments.

Hopefully that will get you started.
