On Saturday I downloaded Norton Antivirus 2006 and since then have had
nothing but problems. It seems as if the program changed something in
my computer, and so my yahoo messenger does not work, websites where
you have to sign in do not work, and certain buttons do not work when
you click on them . For example, even in the NAV program itself, I can
not get it to load bully because nothig happens when i click on the
word "Next". I wanted to do a system restore, but i can not even get
that to open.
The support that norton offered was useless. They also included a
statement to the effect that maybe my computer problems were
"Coincidence". I will probably have to hire a tech to figure this out,
but wondered if anything similar had happened to others, and if so,
how did you fix it?

not surprising, symantec/norton are notorious for this. ZoneAlarm offers
a pro version and antivirus combination. If you're going to purchase
something, purchase that. Or buy the stand alone zonealarm pro and a
license for AVG from grisoft.com. Both of these programs also offer free
for home use versions.

before trying a rollback, did you try to uninstall the symantec products?

I did Ari, and it did not help.

I stopped using Norton products several years ago. I used Ghost so I could
replace my hard drive and it wouldn't boot. Even after uninstalling the program
it wouldn't work.
They try to make it so difficult to pirate their programs that legitimate users
can't use them.
"Uninstall" and even "System Restore" can't remove all parts of any Norton
program.
You will probably have to purchase an uninstall program or suite with an
uninstall component (Clean Sweep, System Mechanic, etc.) to remove all
references to Norton products in your registry. After that (you may have to run
it twice, rebooting each time) it should be OK.
I will never use Symantec products again, and I warn all of my friends to avoid
Symantec/Norton programs like the plague they are.

When I had a local company build my computer they said the same thing.
They liked PC Cillin the firewall is pretty basic, but it passed every
leak test I tried. Their AV is excellent, and I like knowing who is
connected to my wireless lan. The best part is it comes up fast and
doesn't use much of my resources. Norton bogged down my system. Very
good deal for the price. Norton will not be on this machine. There is
a tool you can download from Symantec that helps to uninstall Norton.

When I had my PC I always had PCcillin on it. I also had it on the one
at work. Nothing ever got past it, it updates itself so you don't have
to remember to do it, and it's great. They also have a free service on
their site called House Call if you get a virus, it will get rid of it.

We had problems with Norton as well and had a devil of a time to uninstall it.
Finally had to get a special programme. However it was for older versions. Jim
did some looking last night, Rose and suggests you try this, it is a Norton page
that tells you how to uninstall their 2004-5-6 versions. Hope it helps.

If it's the wrong version just send them an email and they'll send
back instructions.
Just for the record. I use McAfee and like it although in the past I
have had all the problems attributed to Norton. All anti Virus
programs are touchy.

Don't know much about Norton per se. does it include a pop-up blocker and/or
firewall? The pop-up blocker may be preventing sign-in windows. The firewall
might not be set for your sights to be in a "trusted" zone.

That would be my guess too. I don't use Norton anymore but giving
certain programs permission is a must. Good luck.

OK Folks:
I removed Norton as it was due to be updated. I installed a 15-day free
trial of Zone Alarm and like its features. My worry is that a little shield
in the taskbar from Microsoft tells me I have no anti virus protection--but
Zone Alarm says it is on. Help. Thanks. Jan O'

That was ZoneAlarm Pro...the regular version is always free for personal
use, not just for 15 days.

ZoneAlarm is not an antivirus, it's a firewall. It offers some email
protection, but you should also use an antivirus program. You can
pruchase both the Pro version of the firewall and an antivirus program
from the zonealarm website. www.grisoft.com also offers a great
antivirus called AVG and the pricing is for a two year license, most
others are for one year. As with ZoneAlarm, there is a free version of
AVG for personal use. I use this on my windows computer and have been
very happy with it.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I had nothing but trouble with Norton. It conflicted with everything and
completely screwed up my games.
I took Larry's advice and now exclusively use Zone Alarm's free version and
AVG's free version. They cost nothing and work great. Can't beat that.
I hope you get it worked out, Rose. Computer problems suck rocks.

I have never had anything but trouble from Norton products. They are
quite difficult to uninstall also. I wish I had a magic fix for you
but I don't. I just wanted to offer my best wishes for getting this
worked out.

Thank-you Kelly and Angela:
Having people say that they also have had trouble with Norton is
comforting to me because then I understand it is not my fault. Did I
mention that the tech support person said that it may be "coincidence"
that my computer developed problems at the very time that I was
downloading NAV 2006? Now how likely is that?

I liked Norton products when Peter Norton himself was writing utility
programs for the Apple II machines, but haven't used anything but Ghost
on my Windows machines for several years. :-)

Most optical drives have a small hole in the face of the device. It is
just big enough to insert a straightened paper clip. Insert the clip and
push, this should open the drive tray is the discs don't have it jammed
too tight.
