I'm 55 and have had right shoulder trouble as long as I can remember..I
gave up playing piano as a kid because of it.  I've learned to
compensate. Anyway, 4 months ago my left inner shoulder and left neck
started hurting...I went to a chiropractor (first time ever) and am
having therapeutic massage.  Nothing is really helping.  Last week I
merely reached up and something 'cracked'...now I'm really sore.   I do
have severe osteoarthritis in both thumbs and one elbow and get
cortisone injections.  Does arthritis 'spread'?  Am I just old? I'm
very active..I ignore the pain as much as possible and don't let it
stop me.. Anyone got any feedback?

Actually I'm one foot pigeon toed, the x-rays show a slight curvature
of the spine to the right. I only find it a little painful to breath
when my neck/back is really acting up....I afraid it probably is garden
variety arthritis

Squeeze right thigh until kennlocks, put pressure onto heals, sightly
bend left knee, squeeze bum and put pressure onto the toes, point both
feet at 12 oclok, head in line with belly button and eyes forward at
around 4 feet in front of the body, turn rihgt palm forward and left
back (move from the shoulders) and see how much movement you now have

let me know

Gusmi, you can have OA (osteoarthritis) all over your body; I do.  So I
guess you can say it can spread!  Have you been to an RD (rheumatologist)
yet; if not you should.

Yes, I'm going to a RD at Cleveland Clinic (my husband died there a
year and a half ago so I visited one while he was there) This is the
doctor who has been injecting me...everyone where I lived wanted to do
surgery and I'm putting that off as long as possible.  The left
back/neck pain just greatly impinged on my Memorial Day golf game.  I
stood under a hot shower for a long time when I got home and it feels
better.  I've only seen the RD for my thumbs and elbow...what can he do
for my neck/back...is there any sense of keeping going to the
chiropractor and massage therapist?  How do you handle your arthritis?
Where does it come from? I'm very active (my friends say hyperactive)
I still teach ADHD and troubled high schoolers everyday and am a
photographer on the side...I won't let it slow me down but relief would
be nice...

Gusmi, I've had injections in both sides of my neck two or three times and
it really helped for a good while.  I couldn't take Vioxx while it was
available because it caused my blood pressure to go way up, and feet and
legs to swell.  Many things I can't take because of an ulcer and chronic
gastritis.  Right now I am only on pain medicine;
Ultram ER 200 mg, and Voltaren 75 mg twice daily, and a muscle relaxant I
take at bedtime (Zanaflex 4mg) plus two Tylenol Arthritis tablets.  I've had
one hip replaced and a thumb joint replaced.  Tell your RD about any pain
anywhere and see if he can offer some relief; he most probably can.  Good
luck.
My husband and I played golf in Florida after he retired and we moved there,
but both had to stop because of his back injury, and my OA.  He really
enjoyed it; I just learned to be able to play with him at times!  He died in
March 2001.  And I now live near my son in Montgomery, Alabama.

Gwen...you sound like me...I can't take many things because of an ulcer
which ruptured and gastritis..Vioxx skyrocketed my blood pressure.
Celbrex caused my feet to swell.  The Bextra dosage was too high before
it did anything. I didn't know you could inject necks.  Did you have
the same difficulties I have with my thumbs and elbow.  I bruise and
cut easily.  I just lost all the skin on my elbow by bumping the golf
cart steering wheel. What's Voltaren? Ultram was ineffective for me.  I
take Darvocet because that's the one thing that takes the edge off and
I can still operate while using.  I appreciate you sharing.  I
empathize with your loss.  I learned to golf because of my husband
too..I still live on the 18th hole.  I golf for the social aspect, the
exercise and because the course is right outside my window.

Gusmi I too suffered from shoulder pain for years until an occupational
therapist taught me a manuever that resolves the situation. It is
basically stretching my shoulder joints.

What I do is grip on to anything that is sturdy and high up enough that
when I do grip it, it will stretch the muscles in my shoulder. Usually
a good sturdy door frame or door will do. What I do is stand with the
affected side perpendicular to the door frame or door. I reach up and
grab the highest point possible and  hold on until I can feel it
stretching. I hold on for several seconds until the pain is gone.

My doctor told me I have bursitis there but I'll have to wait until I
go to my orthopedic surgeon to find out for sure.
