Hi, Everyone;

Sorry I haven't been vocal lately. Pretty busy -

There was Passover - all the cleaning and cooking (for those of you not
Jewish, think 2 consecutive Thanksgiving feasts that include about 3 hours
of liturgy each).

Followed by the kids April vacation and my older sister visiting from
Denver - we took an overnight trip to Montreal to see the Treasures of
Catherine the Great exhibit (it was wonderful. And the kids were very
patient and well behaved)

Followed by my Mom visiting (the first kind of chemo caused a major problem,
so they are trying a different one and she is tolerating it much better)

Followed by torrential rains which began to seep into the basement the night
before and all day of my sister's graduation from Boston University (became
well acquainted with the shop vac, first vacuuming non-stop and eventually
every two hours round the clock. Water came in on the complete opposite side
of the house from the sump pump)

Followed by getting a cold which wasn't too bad except for the fever and
resulting laryngitis.

Well - I'm supposed to chant some stuff this Saturday at a service when
there is a Bat Mitzvah celebration. Any of you singers know good ways to get
one's voice back? Or sing despite having a squeaky voice?

Hey, Adelle,

Hot tea. Make it green for all the health benefits of green tea. No
lemon but cream and sugar are ok.

That goes in ya and on ya goes good old fashioned Vicks VapoRub. Smear
liberally on your chest and keep it on until you have your hot shower b4 you
go.

I've gotten my soprano voice back since quitting the cigs 2 1/2years
ago. My oldest and youngest sons are both in their respective school
choruses and my youngest got a special chorus award this year. I've gotta
heavily sugar his tea when he has hoarseness but it works.

   Mazel Tov, Adelle!

Hugs from Rosie

Why no lemon? I remember my sister taking lemon juice, honey and crushed
aspirin on a spoon before performing on advice of several vocal coaches.

Thanks! BTW - I'm not the one celebrating a bat mitzvah. I'm one of the
regular leaders and torah chanters. On weeks when there are no guests, I
don't feel too bad if my voice isn't cooperative. But when it's an occassion
and we have so many guests, I feel the need to sound good - to honor the day
and the kid's acheivements.

Rehi,

Because citric acid is an irritant of the vocal cords. So is aspirin
despite being an NSAID.  The tannic acid in tea doesn't stiffen the cords
like lemon or asprin would. You want 'em flexible...and the theophylin (sp.
but I hurt and ain't lookin' it up) in tea loosens the cords and also opens
up your chest. That old remedy your sister was told to do would make ya
squeak all by itself and could even result in nasty nodules on the cords if
done regularly...yer sister got off lucky.

If you were here in FL 'd see to it that you drank freshly cut, cold
aloe in water. <g>

The Vicks is half the battle at getting yer cords reduced in
irritation....so hate it if ya must but do it anyway. LOL The heat from the
shower helps, too.

Honey makes my voice cloudy so I don't do it. If it doesn't affect the
clarity of yours then have at it!

   Hopin' it goes well.

Rehugs from Rosie

Thanks for the explanation. Will remember it from now on.

Gave my aloe plant to my sister some time back. Oh well. <bg>
Actually - I want a new one. But every time I get one, the poor thing
vacillates between drying out and getting root rot.

Just as an fyi, the Traditional Medicinals 'throat coat' tea has helped
some. I can practice some today with far fewer squeaks and breaks (where the
voice just fails - just isn't there at all). And yes, I must practice. When
chanting, the vowels and musical notes don't appear in the scroll. If I
don't have it committed to memory (both mental and muscle), I can't recite
it smoothly. And if I make a mistake, I have the worst time getting back on
track (not something I want for an 'occasion).

Interesting bit of info there about preparing for cantor duties.  I didn't
know that about cantor scrolls.

LOL - the muscle and memory reminds me of the standard advice for singing
Gilbert & Sullivan patter songs - "don't think about it, just do it from
memory."  If you think, you lose it.

Hi, Adelle.  Drying out a bit now?

Tea, and some honey in it may help, too.  Also, warming up your voice by
humming gets you breathing and vocalizing a bit differently and may help
the quality.  Works for me!

Stage fright helps, too... ;)  Gives you a little something extra when the
time comes.

Denise

sort of. The dehumidifier just shut off w/a full tank.

Will try it. Right now, it feels like if I drink any more I'll float away.

Thanks! Adelle

my singer step-daughter (serious singer - operatic soprano) says licorice
tea.  She got Mike drinking it also and he swears it helps.

But it's about time for me to go to bed to recover from reading about how
busy you've been!  LOL  My sympathies on the flooding - our basement flooded
twice this spring - once witht he thaw and again when the sump pump died
during a heavy rain.  The big mop and wringer bucket fromt he church lived in
our basement for a while and Mike gained a lot of experience in using it!

Hmm! I have some Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat which has licorice and
slippery elm bark. Will try it.

Our wasn't anywhere near as bad as yours sounds. But we kept ahead of it (or
tried) using lots of towels for dams.

Hoping you are feeling better soon.

I hope it helps - it was actually one of her early voice teachers (an
operatic alto & university voice prof herself) that got Emily using it.  In
fact, I think that is the brand she likes, though will use other licorice
teas when she can't find it.

Emily has some allergy/asthma problems herself, so has dealt with this a lot
even at the young age of 29.

I've even wondered if some of my trouble was mold in the house from all the
damp!  Our across the street neighbor often wishes she had a basement, but so
many of us flooded around here this spring (very sudden thaw) that she's
decided maybe she's just as glad she doesn't have one!

Mike tells me he moved my stored fabric back onto the floor today so they
fellas could diagnose our heater issues.  I need to look into some shelving
for storing those boxes before the next thaw kicks in......

As the others have said, keep your throat moist and don't push your voice too
much. With laryngitis, it's very easy to really strain your vocal chords and do
long term damage. Use a microphone if at all possible (you may want to practice
with one to see how you sound). If you want any hints on using a mic, e-mail me
(I used to do sound for various folk events and I'm pretty good at keeping the
sound system transparent).
