Why no lemon? I remember my sister taking lemon juice, honey and crushed
aspirin on a spoon before performing on advice of several vocal coaches.

ugh! Hate having that goo on my skin.

Thanks! BTW - I'm not the one celebrating a bat mitzvah. I'm one of the
regular leaders and torah chanters. On weeks when there are no guests, I
don't feel too bad if my voice isn't cooperative. But when it's an occassion
and we have so many guests, I feel the need to sound good - to honor the day
and the kid's acheivements.

Rehi,
Because citric acid is an irritant of the vocal cords. So is aspirin
despite being an NSAID. The tannic acid in tea doesn't stiffen the cords
like lemon or asprin would. You want 'em flexible...and the theophylin (sp.
but I hurt and ain't lookin' it up) in tea loosens the cords and also opens
up your chest. That old remedy your sister was told to do would make ya
squeak all by itself and could even result in nasty nodules on the cords if
done regularly...yer sister got off lucky.
If you were here in FL 'd see to it that you drank freshly cut, cold
aloe in water. <g>
The Vicks is half the battle at getting yer cords reduced in
irritation....so hate it if ya must but do it anyway. LOL The heat from the
shower helps, too.
Honey makes my voice cloudy so I don't do it. If it doesn't affect the
clarity of yours then have at it!
Hopin' it goes well.
Rehugs from Rosie

Thanks for the explanation. Will remember it from now on.
Gave my aloe plant to my sister some time back. Oh well. <bg>
Actually - I want a new one. But every time I get one, the poor thing
vacillates between drying out and getting root rot.
Just as an fyi, the Traditional Medicinals 'throat coat' tea has helped
some. I can practice some today with far fewer squeaks and breaks (where the
voice just fails - just isn't there at all). And yes, I must practice. When
chanting, the vowels and musical notes don't appear in the scroll. If I
don't have it committed to memory (both mental and muscle), I can't recite
it smoothly. And if I make a mistake, I have the worst time getting back on
track (not something I want for an 'occasion).

Interesting bit of info there about preparing for cantor duties. I didn't
know that about cantor scrolls.
LOL - the muscle and memory reminds me of the standard advice for singing
Gilbert & Sullivan patter songs - "don't think about it, just do it from
memory." If you think, you lose it.
