I have recently been put on Warfrin for deep vein thrombosis.  I have a
defective genetic gene that makes my body produce blood clots easier than
the rest of the population.  Because of this I have to take Warfin for the
rest of my life.  I also have Arthritis, in my fingers and my thumbs, my
knees and my neck.  I can no longer take arthritis medication because they
are afraid it will make my stomach bleed.  Warfrin is a blood thinner.  I
now take shots of steroid when I hurt bad and I had some in my hands 4
months ago and they are starting to hurt again.  We have been having a great
deal of rain and I live in Wisconsin and the weather is still a bit chilly
and my shoulder is also aching too along with my hands and neck.  I do have
Tramadol to help with the pain, but was wondering if anyone else was in the
same boat where they couldn't take their Arthritis medication anymore and
was wondering what you do?  The Tramadol doesn't get rid of all the pain.
TIA for anyone that answers.

Hi,

I don't have much advice for you, but wanted you to know I read your
post.  Have you tried arthritis tylenol?  Maybe someone will come along
with more help than me.  Stick around and join the crowd.

Thanks Debbie,  Yes I have tried Tylenol Arthritis, but it doesn't do much
and I don't like to take tylenol as it messes with the liver.  I would have
to take too much of it to work.  I do have a pain pill I can take and it
helps.  But I use them sparingly, I kind of feel I may need them more later.
Someone suggested to me in another group that a hot tub might help.  I
wonder if anyone here has tried that?  I had forgot about icing the
arthritis and am going to start trying that again to see how much that will
help.  Thanks for the invite.

Stinkweed, many of us who take meds that can be harmful to the liver take
Milk Thistle.  It really does protect the liver and I buy mine at WalMart.
Even though I once had "hepatitis suspected but not proved", I have no liver
problems now.

Do you know if this messes with the drug Warfrin?  Some meds make the blood
thick and some make it thin and i have to have my INR checked if I take
something new and it might do this.  I just got down to once INR check up a
month.  I will write this down and call the clinic for testing on Thursday
and talk to them about it.  Thanks last night I was hurting so bad, but
today I feel better, we have had so much rain lately I guess my body is
rebelling.  It is still chilly here too.

If I recall from when I used to take it everything interacts with warfarin
including green salads.  For those of you who haven't had the pleasure that
is not a joke.  Whatever you try in diet or supplaments take it for week
before your next blood draw and then if there is a problem you can adjust
the supplement or the warfarin accordingly.  First I'd talk to the
rheumatologist, or a different rheumatologist to find a less problematic RA
treatment.

I have been Stinkweed for a long time now.  Guess I haven't checked in
lately.  I always went to the other arthritis group but decided to try this
one, it isn't as large as it once was.  I see your still doing well on your
medication.  When I went on the warfrin, they took me off my arthritis
medication and it has been getting progressively worse.  I have been on the
Warfrin since last fall, I almost died with the blood clots and am lucky to
be here.  I'm still in remission with the cancer too.  Going on 4 years now.
:-)  God has been watching over me, but keeps me on my toes.  lol

That is really good news.    I have lost so many friends and neighbors to
cancer.   It lets a person know that they still have purpose on this earth
when they survive cancer.   Please take part here,,,, you are needed for
that too.

Having had cancer it sure does shake you up and makes you realize that bad
things can happen to good people alright and you tend to look at life
differently, it becomes so much more precious.  I'm sorry you lost your
friends to it, it is a nasty thing to deal with.
I have been reading the group Harv and it seems like a very good one and I
would like to join in and get to meet everyone.  I suppose I should
introduce myself to everyone.  When I first posted I was hurting pretty bad,
but things are back to normal now, I just hurt when I use the joints, I had
never delt with the aching before and it is frustrating that I can't take
any arthritis medication to ease that and the hurt.  But if I go off the
warfrin I can get another blood clot.  I'm in a kind of catch 22 here.

I know there are a lot of things that I can't eat or eat much of.  So I just
stick with the same ol same ol.  I do have a list though on my refrigerator.
You can have lettuce but not a lot of it,  If you only have it seldom then
eat it that is where the danger can come in.  But if you are going to eat
it, just a small amount and on a regular basis.  I have a salad about once a
week sometimes two and my INR is staying right where they want it.  But I
have to check everything an all doctors know of my condition.  Well, right
now he has given me pain pills to take, non narcotic and no stomach problem
pill and I get steroid shots.  I have only seen him a couple times so I
haven't been able to form an opinion one way or the other of him other than
he is very compassionate and wants to help me.
I seem to have developed a spur??? on my middle finger on my right hand
though that is sometimes very painful.  When my finger lays straight I can't
feel it, but when I bend it, the spur??? sticks up under the skin and then
if I touch it with anything it is very painful.  I have to make an
appointment and see him and quit messing around.  Thank you for responding,
you gave me a good tip about trying something for a week before going in.
Some antibiotics even mess with the INR.

The deal is actually this: you can eat most anything, but you need to keep
the diet fairly constant and adjust the medecine to suit.   There is some
sort of relationship with warfarin and vitamine K, which is abundant in
salads and other things.  If you have a salad most days you probably take
less warfarin than someone who does not.  So you set up a diet that is
fairly constant in certain things.  It doesn't have to be the same every day
it just has to be fairly constant in things that make a difference.  When I
took that stuff I had a salad every day and we got the doasage just right.
If you're new on warfarin it will take some time to get the dosage right
anyway.  So set up a diet witht he tings you like and make if fairly
constant and you are all set.  Next time you get blood drawn they can adjust
the dosage.

I don't recall the ins and outs of the warfaring business, but if you have
that settled then you can go on and try to get a better arthritis treatment.
You may have to be more careful, but you shouldn't have to forego treatment
because of warfarin as long as everyone knows the status of each of the
treatments.

I think that is correct, but maybe someone knows better.

I'm aware of the vitamin K and lots of food has it in them.  I am on 4mg. a
day and 6 on Sunday, that keeps it where they want it.  I now go in 1x a
month to get tested.  I was taking Mobic and it was doing a great job, but
they immedietly took me off it as they was afraid it would make my stomach
bleed.  The Rhumotologist then put me on Tramadol for the pain, but I don't
take it as prescribed although it is not a narcotic he said I could become
dependent on it so I don't want to go there.  instead of 3 pills a day, I
just take it at night, if I don't my neck is very sore in the morning.  I
will take your advise though and talk to him and see if there isn't anything
that will mess with my stomach.  He said there was no limit on steroid shots
when I needed them, but so far he has only used them on my thumbs and one
knee.  I try to maintain a good attitude about it all but sometimes it is
hard to do when you are in pain.  I just thank God that I have the computer
and can talk to people as that keeps my mind off all it a good bit of the
time.  I don't want to get down, it is so important I maintain a positive
attitude because of the cancer.
