I've recently started reading newsgroups again and thought I'd better
introduce myself. I'm Dave, I suffer from OA in my knees, wrists and
hands. My wrists and hands are so bad that I'm currently signed-off and
receiving IB (Invalidity Benefit to those not in the UK). I also get
DLA, which provides me with a car, but precious little else. I'm having
a debate with them about my care component at the moment.

Before my hands got so bad I was a freelance IT Consultant. Now I can't
type for more than a few minutes because my hands hurt so much. I do use
voice input on my Mac (iListen), but that doesn't work very well - it
tends to crash every time I do corrections. Worse it brings down the
application I'm dictating into more often than not. Yes, the iListen
support team are looking into it, but they don't seem to be getting very
far, either.

So, greetings to everyone. Because of my hands I'm afraid I'm going to
have to lurk rather than be a frequent poster, but I'll be here, for the
foreseeable future, it seems.

Cheers for now,

Dave

Welcome Dave. I have OA in every joint, most of which have been replaced in
the new body shop lol. There's a lot of lurkers here, me included. Feel free
to ask any questions in this group, but we all suffer from RL (real life)
and get too busy.
Sorry, can't help you with any queries re Mac and iListen, but others might
use it.

Dave, sorry you need to be here, but welcome.  You can learn a lot just
lurking.  Post when you are able to do so.

Greetings Dave and welcome,

I too have arthritis (PA) in my feet, knees, wrists, and fingers. Like you
my career is in the IT world. I understand your frustration. Expically when
you're so dependant on your hands to do your job and bring home the bacon.

Are there any treatments available to you? I'm trying Enbrel and pray that
it works.

Hello Dave...I have OA in my hips and a bit in my spine..and have allways
thought that was by far the most common joint's for OA ..
you say "I suffer from OA in my knees, wrists and  hands." ..not hips ??
Are you sure it is OA rather than RA ??

Let me just say that the specialist I saw when I first developed trouble
with my hands was very certain that this was OA. I had feared I was
developing RA, so, in some ways, it was a relief.

Nat that it helped with the pain, or the disability, but still ...

Cheers,

Dave

Welcome, Dave!  I'm sorry you have so much cause to be here, though.  Your
wrists and hands sound especially painful and it must be so frustrating for a
former IT consultant!  Is there any possibility that they might be able to
make you less uncomfortable with surgery?  I know some people ahve had wrist
replacements, though one must be careful with them.

I'm a Mac person, but can't help you any with iListen.  I've had times when I
considered similar software, but have speak defects I fear would really
complicate things.  I hope the support team can figure it out for you.

We have an author here who once wrote an entire novel using Dragon on her PC.
There is a classic example of it typing a far different sentence than she
spoke - quite funny.  I don't have it handy right now, but I bet someone will
find it and post it........

Well, nobody's ever suggested they operate on my hands yet. There is a
chance of an op on my knee - if I can lose a lot of weight.

I can imagine - I've used Dragon in the past (when I was working) and
both it and iListen give me some howlers from time to time!

Cheers for now,

Dave
