Hi, I'm trying to find other people who've gone through knee
replacement surgury who would be interested in sharing their
experiences and concerns with others.  I've set up a google group
specifically for this topic as I'm trying to focus in on joint
replacement concerns.

The group is: http://groups.google.com/group/Joint-Replacement-Support.

If you have gone through this procedure, I'd be very greatful if you
could post some information about your recovery, how you are dealing
with trying to bend your knee, and what obstacles you've faced.  For
example, does it hurt to bend it past 90 degrees? If so, are you
supposed to keep bending it?? Should it continue to be swollen all the
time and for how long?  It seems like in order to get questions like
these answered, I'd have to make an appointment with a doctor, wait a
month, pay my copay and then just get the basic, terse answers (not
from a doctor whose actually experienced it either).

I hope you can help enlighten me/us by sharing what you've learned.

Thanks and I hope to see you in the new Google group Joint Replacement
Support!

Hi Andrea.  I'd be glad to participate.  I once wrote my own journal on the
TKR surgery and recuperation time when I had it done in 2000.  It used to be
posted on Immune Support (thanks to Rosie), but they reorganized and it went
off into spaced somewhere ;-)  I think I've saved it, and I'll E-mail it to
you.  Nanny

Thanks! That will be great.  I'm actually trying to help out my
grandfather as he's getting frustrated in feeling like he's having to
go through all of this by himself, and exploring new territory alone.
I hope you are able to find your journal. I'm sure my grandfather will
appreciate having something like that to read.

I have a hard copy of my journal, but I couldn't find it in my saved files.
I thought I had put it where it could be reached easily.  I'll see what I
can do.  Nanny

You should be asking your doctor these questions. It would depend on
what type of knee he put in just what kind of bend you should be
expected to get and how much of a bend was too much.
This is not a one knee one answer question. Type is all important and
unfortunately not every one knows what kind of TKR they had installed.

Hi Andrea,

I am going through recovery from a total knee revision (done 4/27).
This is my third knee surgery, and each one has been different.  Not
everyone heals the same way, you should consult the doctor for his/her
recovery parameters.

Most hospitals have a joint replacement department, and I recommend you
contact a medical professional for any questions you may have.

Thanks for the advice (and disclaimers ;-)  I realize each person is
different and so are the procedures, but sometimes it helps to just
have someone to talk to about what problems they had and how they are
coping with it.  Doctors and nurses haven't always gone through the
procedures they advise about and are unable to truly empathize with
their patients.  It's like someone losing weight...if you were
overweight and were being advised by someone who never before was over
weight, wouldn't you feel like that person really couldn't relate to
everything you were going through? I certainly would.  I'd rather have
someone to talk to who could honestly understand the emotional side of
things as well as the techinical side - that's where I would seek out a
support group.  It seems there are hundreds of support groups out there
for everything from childbirth and alcoholics to road rage.  I'm just
trying to find the support group for knee replacement and it seems
there's a huge deficiency in this particular category.

In light of these recent posts, it seems I might need to just start
gathering the little snippets of experience people are willing to share
on various sites, and then compile those somewhere as a collection.
I'm pretty sure there aren't any such comprehensive websites out there
- but there are some that are fairly good.

Thanks again for taking the time to give me some feedback.
