making a public resolution

Diane - 09 May 2006 03:39 GMT okay, maybe if i post this here, i will actually follow through. i hereby pronounce that i am going to the 8 am pool class at the Y this coming wednesday. i haven't been to a class or exercised in years and years and something's gotta give! my new years resolution was to join the Y, but here it is may and i haven't done it. two weeks ago, i actually went and OBSERVED the wednesday class. it's not the class for arthritis, so i was worried it would be too much for me, but the teacher said it doesn't matter what i'm doing under the water--just that i'm doing something.
anyone else want to join me in resolving to exercise?
will report in on wednesday.

melodymom - 09 May 2006 03:50 GMT Pick me up on the way, okay? I discovered a few months ago while in AZ on vacation that I can still swim. Don't have to worry about drowning, either, as there is no way I can sink - I tried! LOL
Good luck w/ your resolution. May you find so much pleasure in the pool you never need to force yourself again. <G>

ladylove77 - 09 May 2006 03:51 GMT A branch of the Y is near my house and I went before I had my thumb surgery, but the water was so cold part of the time that it was very unpleasant for me. Don't think it did my OA too much good in the cold water. There is a place way across town that is supposed to really have warm water and it is much less expensive than the Y, but I haven't gotten up the nerve to try it---and now I can blame it on the price of gasoline! Me. I sort of abandoned the good work when I started this new coursework.I feel the difference. So although I won't be joining you at the pool, I will make a point of doing my walk aerobics each evening. Earlier I challenged myself my having a specific amount of miles to walk in a given time. I had wanted to walk 200 miles by the time i go to Baltimore, but I am not sure that is realistic given the amount of time the studying takes, and the lump on my foot. But i will try for 100 miles. janers - 09 May 2006 14:04 GMT Diane, if you think it is NOT for arthritis, then just go do it and NOT do all they do. Being in the water JUST itself is great. I am doing it right now as well and it has made a big difference.
I am in intermediate and they do get a little more, shall I say, fast, so just tell the instructor and she will probably give you other things to try and do. IT IS true what the teacher said. There is a group that use waist floaters and that is very strenuous but if you are just in there on your feet, it will be good> NOW remember this one, the first week you do this? It will tire you out and YOU wil ache but after, take your pain meds for awhile and heating pad after a nice warm shower and don't get discouraged. That is the big thing. MOst of us think, oh water and go like H but it is not good for you. You need to go slow and YES for some it hurt after but it will get better. YES it will. I used to get headaches from my neck fusion with water but that is pretty much gone now, so it can work for you.
Just tell teacher, HOW you feel and DON't think you have to KEEP up with the group> you do not.
good luck and let me know will ya?

ladylove77 - 09 May 2006 20:10 GMT Peter, when you do it, you will wonder why in the world you waited so long! The relief is wonderful. Just be careful and don't dislocate it. Gwen

I can count on one hand the number of times we've gone to the pool. We will be going regularly as soon as we get back from our week in Maryland.

LOL Not me!
Good luck, all. I'm still working on getting someone to commit to taking me. I'll let you know when that happens. ;)

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 11 May 2006 02:26 GMT The only problem is it 'seems' so far away. It takes a good 35 minutes by car to get there, then of course, at least 35 minutes back. Plus the time in the shower and blow drying my hair and then putting on my make-up, and then.... Am I getting any sympathy yet?

Diane - 11 May 2006 04:21 GMT you have my sympathy, dee tee. the dressing/makeup/hair stuff really bugs me. oh, and the getting in the water. it's 80-84 degrees but that is cold when you're getting in. but my pool is only 5 minutes away and i didn't make it. 35 minutes would really keep me away. will bob go with you?
diane
DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 12 May 2006 02:41 GMT Yes - when he can. That's sorta why I keep putting it off. I have told him though that, whether he goes or not, when we get back from Maryland, I'm going.

Truly, they do at the water aerobics class back in Bay City - if anyone drops something in the pool, the instructor has to get in and retrive it so they can stay dry from the shoulders up. I'll admit it rather amused us as we were swimming our laps.

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 12 May 2006 02:42 GMT Noooooo - if I'm near water, I'm under it and in it and through it. I love, love, love to swim. If money were no object, I'd have one of those endless pools in my garage. I would dearly love to wake up, stretch, put on my suit and swim for half an hour before starting each day. Sigh. It only takes about $10K for a basic no-frills pool. I checked.

Nann Bell - 10 May 2006 05:55 GMT I'll join you, IF you call at 6:25 to wake me up..... and again at 6:30 and 6:35... three times ought to do it. ;-) just not a morning person. then again, last week teh PA told me to stop digging in the garden AND to get more exercise again. Hunh? working on the garden WAS my exercise. Just trying to listen to my body for a while now.
Rah! Rah! Go Diane! Set us a good example!

Carole - 17 May 2006 23:14 GMT > anyone else want to join me in resolving to exercise? Well, I am going to resolve to do it as well. Sometimes bad things turn into good things and this is one of those cases. My present apartment complex sent me my new lease with a rent raise of $59 a month. Since I'm on SSDI, there is no way I could afford that, nor would I pay that much to stay here. I have been thinking about moving up north near my friends for a while, so this was the kick you know where that I needed. I am just north of Seattle now, and in June I'll be moving to Bellingham. I have found a lovely apartment with lots of sunlight, and a nice deck where I can sit outside. The complex also has an indoor pool so I'll be able to swim 12 months out of the year. My present complex has an outdoor pool which one can only use June, July, and August.
The other really SUPER thing about my new apartment is that water/sewer/garbage and extended basic cable TV are included in the rent. At my present place I pay $30 for w/s/g and $49 for cable each month. So I'll be saving $79 there, and to top it off the base rent where I am going is $50 less than what I'm paying now. So all in all, I'm getting an indoor pool and will be paying $129 less. So, ask me if I'm a happy camper?? Answer: Yes!! :)
Now, since it's very difficult for me to do certain things around the house (I have severe congestive heart failure in addition to arthritis), I am thinking about looking into Merry Maids or one of those places. I am thinking maybe once or twice a month since I live alone and don't make that much of a mess. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on what they charge. My new apartment is 735 square feet. I'm just wondering if this is in the realm of possibilities.
Thanks, Carole :)
Diane - 18 May 2006 00:15 GMT hi carole, well you are certainly making lemonade out of lemons! bellingham is wonderful. my little brother lives there and is a librarian at the university. he wouldn't live anywhere else.
i used to have The Maids clean my virginia house (expensive area). it was 2400 square feet and cost me $108 for every two weeks. obviously yours should be considerably less. they charge more the first time, tho. they were very good and fast.
please get a lot of help with all the packing and unpacking.

Carole - 18 May 2006 04:52 GMT > hi carole, > well you are certainly making lemonade out of lemons! bellingham is [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > diane Thanks, Diane. I'm going to have a lot of help and I have over a month to do all of this, so I'll be OK. I get the keys to the new apartment on June 9th and I don't have to be out of here until the 24th, so I'll start taking boxes up a little at a time. I also have a friend with a small truck and another friend with a station wagon, so they are going to help as well.
I'm also sorting stuff and have a pile now to put on eBay and another pile for Salvation Army. And anything that I don't want that doesn't fit in either of those categories goes into the dumpster :) I'm downsizing a lot as I have boxes from my move out here three years ago that I haven't looked at in over two years, so I'm thinking that I don't really need whatever is in them :)

melodymom - 18 May 2006 02:53 GMT Gee, Carole, now that you are going to move farther away, maybe we can get together! LOL I have a friend in Bellingham, and though we don't connect often, we do try to meet up at least once a year.
The move sounds great for you - except the "move" part, that is - and hope everything goes smoothly. Happy swimming. luv&stuff, Denise

When you come to B'ham let me know :) We could do lunch. I'm free all the time since I'm on SSDI :))
Yea, moving sucks, but I'm looking at it very positively as I love my new place and can't wait to get into that pool :))))

melodymom - 18 May 2006 05:36 GMT I'm in Puyallup. I see my aunts more often since we moved here than when we lived a few blocks apart. Silly, but typical.
I'll hold you to it, Carole. Lunch in B'ham, that is. Best of everything to you.

Nann Bell - 18 May 2006 13:59 GMT Carole, that new apartment sounds like a wonderful deal for you! I'm envious. I've been trying to talk myself back into swimming - at least into seeing if my neck will behave if I return to it - but my current fatigue and the 25 mile drive through construction to the pool have been discouraging me!
I hope you can afford the maid service. I'd love some myself, but it really isn't in the budget right now. Mike *says* he'll help, but the reality is that only happens if I hound him and it isn't worth it. Maybe Puddin' has finally shed all of his winter coat so vacuuming won't be as necessary over the summer, I hope, I hope.........

I've been trying to talk myself back into swimming - at least into [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > finally shed all of his winter coat so vacuuming won't be as necessary over > the summer, I hope, I hope......... Not sure if I can do the maids thing. I got this quote from one place: Weekly $75 Bi-Week $85 4 Weekly $105
I might be able to swing the once a month thing, I'll have to see once I get into the apartment. I am saving $129 over what I'm paying now, and I just finished paying off my car (hallelujah!) so I'm thinking it will be doable.
One of the main reasons I went to look at this apartment complex was because of the indoor pool. They also have a sauna, spa, and fitness center in the same building. And my apartment building is the second one over from the building with all of this in it, so I have no excuse :) Even if it's raining, I'll be getting wet anyway!
Aren't there any pools closer to you? Check out high schools and community colleges, along with regular colleges. Most of them have pools these days. It's surprising sometimes where pools turn up :)

Nann Bell - 19 May 2006 04:51 GMT > Aren't there any pools closer to you? Check out high schools and > community colleges, along with regular colleges. Most of them have pools > these days. It's surprising sometimes where pools turn up :) > > Carole LOL - we now live in a *county* of 10,000 people.... and 30,000 deer. Oddly enough, we also have 3 school districts in this county so all the schools are poor. It would have made much more sense to pool resources into one district and one high school but old animosities stood in the way.
Anyway, the nearest pool is at the county high school in the neighboring county, pop. 30,000, with an actual town of 10,000! The nearest community college is in the same town, but even further away. Actually, the pool at the high school is the county pool, It just shares grounds with the school
It's just the reality when you live 22 miles from the nearest MacDonald's! We do have a Subway in the gas station out on the main east-west drag for this part of the state but still you know you're in the country if there's no Micky D's nearby! LOL On the other hand, folks seem a lot healthier here than in the southern and more populated parts of the state.
Still hoping the maid thing works out. If they can just do the deep cleaning periodically, than you can probably keep up with the surface stuff.
