Argh!  pain!  fatigue!

We were off in tropical souther Michigan the last two days to elect a new
(Episcopal) bishop for our diocese.  Thank goodness we reached a decision
yesterday, because I won't be able to take another weekend of this!

My leg muscles, esp. hamstrings, have been aching bigtime for about 3 weeks
now.  My meds help a bit and so does stretching, but I have to stretch many
times/day to get even a bit of benefit.  But we had a long drive down to
Grand Blanc.  And Mike was flying back from Boston late which meant I was up
late until we'd had a chance to talk about a couple of things.  Then it was a
long day of sitting/standing/sitting/standing through the election
convention.  Then a long ride back north, with a couple of stops for shopping
and dinner.  Meanwhile, I forgot to refill the tramadol I carry with me, so I
only had tylenol for pain control.  By the time we got home I was soooooooo
ready to swallow a handful of pain meds and collapse on the couch!  I was
aching so terribly and was as worn out as can be.

Well, when we were putting away the food we bought coming home - stuff we can
only get down there - one shelving unit we use for food storage in the
basement fell over.  sigh...............  Surprisingly, many of the jars
survived, but a jar of pickles and 3-4 jars of jelly busted.  Plenty to make
a royal mess of everything.  Working together, we got it all cleaned up in a
half hour or so.  I got upstairs to whipped to even put away the very little
luggage I took along.

I finally got some tramadol in my to help with the pain.  I also decided to
take half a muscle relaxer in the evening instead of waiting for my bedtime
dose as I was so sore.  Well, the muscles were so wound up, I had major
muscle spasms while the Zanaflex was acting.  I was literally writhing on the
couch for a while.  Ended up taking a couple of tylenol 3s I've been
hoarding.  For a while I feared I wouldn't be able to sleep, but the meds
finally kicked in.  This morning I was hurting to much to take my Fosamax- I
had to get the pain medicine inme immediately.  I suspect I'll be sleeping
all afternoon - at least I hope so.  It can only help me.  I'm thnking now
I'd best take another half Zanaflex to get through church.  Ack!

At last, to my question.  Those of you with thyroid issues, did you have much
in the way of muscle aches with it?  And has anyone gone hypothyroid quickly
after being normal?

My mom and sister are both hypothyroid.  I've been tested several times, most
recently last Sept. to make sure that isn't a component in my fibro.  Been
normal thus far.  But the fatigue and muscle aches have been so much worse
lately.  And I've learned online that hypothyroiditis is associated with low
albumin levels, the reason I had that liver biopsy last month.  Also, my
cholesterol balance and triglyceride level have gotten worse the past 6
months - also can happen with thyroid problems, I see.  I had decided to go
in and see my PCP about all this if my last albumin draw was still low, but
when I saw my RD's PA last week, my lab results hadn't made it to the chart.
She really thought is was just a fibro flare, but it's never been this bad
before.

Can you tell I'm getting frustrated?  I'm so fatigued and so aching and
spring is springing outside!  now for a rest before church.

Ditto from me Nann. I am thinking a bit of Char's stash might help too.
My legs and hips are driving me nuts just now and I am always stretching
several times a day. It does help but doesn't seem to hold. sigh
Gentle hugs lady.

Heya, Nann,

It' s one of the main things they tell ya on alt.support.thyroid...it's
not necessarily what the numbers say, it's how you feel.

Ya gotta go get tested. I'd wait to see if the fatigue lifts some
soon....but if not, get an earlier in May appt. rather than later.

Yes, my hypothyroid came on suddenly...but no one knew I had such a
rapid progression of CTD going on and it caused me Hashi's from one month to
the next. Often ya gotta keep bugging the docs until they test ya. You could
be showing signs of Chronic Fatigue, instead....or just a flare from hell
which stress causes FM'ers.

It's such an individual thing, literally, that your sibs having it or
not has got next to nothing to do with it. If you get a chance, pop in and
start reading over at AST...they're a great bunch over there.:-)

Hugs from Rosie

Well--I have had hypothyroid since God was a child--but problems in the last
two years with cholesterol so my Family doc sent me to a great
endocrinologist who told me that the choles problems were being made worse
by the thyroid stuff--that most Gps look at the numbers and if you are
within they don't think you have low thyroid--but she prefers to keep people
at the high range--so even though my numbers were low normal, they were too
low--now with thyroid adjusted my cholesterol is much easier to
control--didn't notice any other low thyroid symptoms but then I was already
on Synthroid--and between the RA, the fibro, the anemia, the meniere's etc
etc--it is hard to sort out--my suggestion is get to a good
endocrinologist--

hmmmmm, more to think about.  Naturally, our phone book doesn't list any
endocrinologists in NE MI.  I may have more drives to Petoskey ahead.  Recent
efforts to lose weight stalled out, but I don't know if it's just the fatigue
factor limiting exercise.

Meanwhile, assuming you don't mind, I think I'll forward your reply to my
sister.  She's had trouble getting her cholesterol in line and I don't know
how high her PCP is keeping her thyroid.  She got major muscle aches from the
statins, so she's only on Zetia for the cholesterol.

well, I seem to have inherited more stuff than either other sibling, so I've
come to expect it!  LOL  As long as the diabetes stays away.........

I remembered after my afternoon nap (4.5 hours....) that we've maxxed out on
co-pays for me this year so an MD trip will cosst us only time and gas.  I'll
try to be really good for a couple of days before calling though.  But it's
so nice outside and there's gardening to do!  Then again, very little rain
for 2 months, spring pollen and extreme fire danger makes working outdoors a
real challange to my allergies..........

Not ssure I have the energy for another newsgroup right now, but maybe it's
time for some lurking anyway.

well, I just talked to my RD's nurse to get my latest albumin level.  I've
been off mtx and on full milk thistle again for 2 months when these labs were
drawn and my albumin level has dropped even further in that time, even while
the liver biopsy came out just fine. Finding out my albumin is even lower
made the decision for me - I see my PCP Tuesday.  Meanwhile, it's finally
raining here, knocking down the pollen and dust so my sinuses at least are
happier!

Nann,
I am sorry that you are feeling so bad, you are always so encouraging to me
I hope that I can do the same for you. I will keep you in my prayers and
hope that a couple days of rest will help you. It does make a big difference
to me to know that others out there can relate to you.  I suffer from
muscles aches all the time but was told first fm then ra I didn't even think
about having them both,!  why don't the docs tell you can?  Oh well this
isn't about me just wanted you to know that I am wishing a restful day and
hoping that you will be out of pain soon.

I do empathize with you, Nann.  I got leg cramps from h... when I got
dehydrated from a virus.  They went away after they gave me some
potassium, but I sure know how they feel.  Have you tried a heating
pad?  That often helps when my back or legs start to spasm.  Or, have
you tried just sitting down for a while? LOL Your schedule makes me
tired just looking at it. I do feel sorry for all the snafus that have
been happening.  I will be praying for you.  Good luck,

Loujean

Nann, I empathize with you as well! I've had problems with my
hamstrings, but I thought it was from the AS? They are tight and taut
all of the time, and it's really painful, so I think I may know a
little bit of what you speak.
I wish I had answers for you, but I don't. I only have this here prayer
which I'm saying for you right now and some good vibes which I will
send you later.
Hugs,

No wisdom, just gentle hugs! Hope you are feeling better soon.

Found an organic hot chocolate from a company called Dagobah (not the planet
on Star Wars). It has cinnamon and chili flavoring, like what is thought to
be like the Aztecs originally served. It packs a bite, so its not for the
faint of palate.

Sending you some virtually. Hoping it helps to brighten the day.

Yum!  that sounds really good!  heehee, I always have to be careful when
cooking for potlucks around here - 99% of the local populace would run
screaming from the general level of spicyness employed in our house.  (should
have seen the confusion when I tokk a mild curried chicken salad one time!
LOL - they ate it all up, though!)

Virtually is good.  The lack of exercise from this fatigue is taking a toll
on my weight and conditioning.  I've given in and started counting calories
again.  But the thought of searching out this stuff down the road for an
occasional treat........... <licking chops>

Nann,

I sure hope you are doing better now. I feel for you. I hope something works
to help you out.

I know with Hashimotos it is heritary (sp). So I would think the others
could be too. I also think Graves is heritary also.
