From time to time the Arthritis Society sends a mobile van into rural
areas to deliver services to those who otherwise might not be able to
access them. I saw the OT this past Thursday for a follow up. She is
the one that recommended the fellow that is making my shoes. She was
surprised that I had not yet heard from him, but thought that maybe
he was just busy as it is a one man operation.
Because I now have this large lump under my right foot, my orthotic is
no longer suitable. She filed it down somewhat, but I will need to get
new orthoses made. She made molds of my foot, and I will need to go to
Vancouver to have the job completed. Hopefully the new orthoses will
not be much different in size from my other ones because the custom
made shoes were made to fit them.
This is a wonderful service, and we are so lucky that it is available.
For a period of about three years the van did not come due to cutbacks
in government funding, and I am sure that the service was sorely
missed by hte many clients it serves (pun intended).

simply brilliant! I recall you mentioning seeing the OT this way before. A
great service indeed. The only thing that comes close here is our mobile
mammogram unit, which I love. I can either drive 60 miles round trip for my
mammo or walk two blocks to it when the mobile unit comes out to our town.
That was a no-brainer.
Hope you get the new orhtotics soon. That lump must be miserable for
mobility.

Yes it is a great service, and yes the lump is uncomfortable.
I tried the "shaved down" orthotics yesterday, and they are
comfortable for a few minutes, but then not too great after that. Oh
well. All in all I am still doing well, so I really should not
complain.
