My laptop hard drive crashed...completely...utterly...to the point that the
Geek Squad cannot recover any data from it. I am sad. However, since it is
less than a year old, it's under warranty and our estimate for repairs was
$0.00. We are hoping it will be fixed in time for our trip to Maryland in
two weeks. They said it might be. The data was backed up last on April 4th,
so I'm only out one month's worth of work. That is enough to make me sad...I
work on it every day and had just inputed a play I am producing and
directing for a large (about 500 people) picnic on July 22nd. I have to
start over. At least I had printed a hard copy of my work, I just hadn't
done the May backup yet. The drive physically crashed - the arms that grip
it to read it are no longer attached...they self-destructed. The computer
has not been dropped, bumped or otherwise abused. I usually close it when I
am finished. I was closing it, got about 2/3 down when I remembered
something and reopened it. Suddenly it started a noise as though it were
grinding meat. I knew then that the hard drive was gone to that big computer
graveyard. Heavy sigh.

DeeTee, I'm sad for you. I've lost two and had to start over each time.
Nothing backed up.

Gwen - always, always, always back up your work. Whether you choose daily,
weekly, or monthly depends on your habits. I chose monthly, but
unfortunately I always did it in the evenings. I had three good hours
yesterday morning in which I should have done the backup, but you never know
when you'll need to restore your data. Sigh.

Whew! while that is a pain and a hassle, when I saw the subject line I
feared it was part of you that was brokeded. I am relieved to hear it was
"just" your laptop!

Sounds like you need to go to a once a week back up instead. I love this
new Seagate [think that is right] that I back up to. Poke a button and
it is off and running. And once a week I get a pop up message saying it
has been 7 days since your last back up. Perfect.
I still have to send this new laptop back due to the keyboard loosing
keys but so far things are working so much better. And like you, I have
an extended warranty that has paid for itself with several free repairs
followed by a new computer. When the new once arrived I bought a new
extended service pack for it.
BTW, I don't think you broke it -- I think it was a total coincidence
that it chewed itself up when you reopened.

Yes, I know, but it described how I felt....like a little kid who didn't
know what happened. And, yes, I am moving to weekly backups as soon as I get
my 'puter back.

Now I'm glad I take the time to backup my data to CD every night. Of
course that includes both personal financial data and work stuph.

I sympathize DeeTee as I just went through the same thing. BTW, it takes
a tech about an hour to pop out the old drive and put the new one in. I
took mine in on a Tuesday and got it back on a Saturday as there were a
lot of machines ahead of me. When they put the new drive in, ask them
what brand it is. My original was a Toshiba. My machine was one month
out of warranty, so I bought my own replacement drive and just had them
install it, and I got a Seagate as they are warrantied for 5 years.

Hi DeeTee,
A harddrive blowing apart isn't your fault, but not having all new
work backed up or better yet Archived is. :-(
I now have a 32mg Smart Media card in the slot & copy all new data to
it when ever I make changes. CD's are really inexpensive (most places
have a 50 pack for less than $20) & it is easy to copy all new data to
one.
Sorry you lost all your hard work, now learn your lesson & don't let
it happen again, OK! ;-)
Sending Good Thoughts,

Well, I only lost one month. I was backing up the 4th of every month. Now I
think I'll go to once a week.
