I've been taking it for about a year and a half, not sure if it helps or not.

I got results within a couple of weeks, quite fast from what the literature
says to expect. But only for the OA in my knees. No relief from the RA with
Glucosamine. I also take it in combo with Chondroitin and MSM (that's how
the pill I purchase is formulated, but I hear that's the most effective
combo).

I've heard some people say they really didn't notice a difference until they
stopped the medication and their pain increased suddenly.

Check your dose. If you are not taking 1500 mg twice a day (and some advise
50% more if you weigh more than 200 lbs. I do not take additional despite
that advise), you are under dosing.

From what my RD said, it may or may not be helpful. One large study showed that
it seemed to work best for those who are badly affected with OA. I tried
stopping it for two weeks then went back on because I felt I was having more
pain. But arthritis is such a weird disease flitting around from joint to joint
and having good days and bad days I find it really hard to judge. I would think
if no positive results after 6 months it would be questionable if it is working.
I am presuming you have an RD who is addressing your MS.

NIH just completed a study and found Glucosamine alone was no better
than placebo.  There was some promise of Glucosamine and Chondroitin
together, but nothing definitive.  You can look for the study on the
web but I think they said a month for results, if you don't notice a
difference I would not spend money on it. The NIH study was huge
thousands of folks were involved.  Results were just released, if you
search this NG I posted some links to it. -- MZ

The New England Journal had this in an Editorial piece,  the study
refers to the NIH:

Based on this study], it seems prudent to prudent to tell our patients
with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee that neither glucosamine
hydrochloride nor chondroitin sulfate alone has been shown to be more
efficacious than placebo
for the treatment of knee pain. If patients choose to take dietary
supplements to control their symptoms, they should be advised to take
glucosamine sulfate rather than glucosamine hydrochloride and, for
those with severe pain, that taking
chondroitin sulfate with glucosamine sulfate may have an additive
effect. Three months of treatment is a sufficient period for the
evaluation of efficacy; if there is no clinically significant decrease
in symptoms by this time, the supplements
should be discontinued. Furthermore, there is no evidence that these
agents prevent osteoarthritis in healthy persons or in persons with
knee pain but normal radiographs [11].

I guess it depends on what we're expecting from taking it.  My Rheumy told
me to buy the biggest, cheapest bottle of Glucosamine and take it every day.
Perhaps the results are "hidden".  I don't feel any difference and I've been
taking it for quite awhile.  But, that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't
doing its job - just that we don't see or feel it.  Nanny
