Well, the food diary suggests that it is dairy products making me hack and
cough.  My PCP says to trial and error on this one because, for instance, I
may be able to tolerate a little shredded cheese in an omelet but not a
chunk of cheese with crackers. She said the only way to find out my
tolerance level is trial and error. She wanted me to get some calcium
supplements but I told her I had been on those for several years now.  I
occasionally remember to take Lactaid before ice cream or a glass of milk,
but this is the first time I've ever heard of coughing being a symptom.  My
daughter told me to try lactaid milk.  I will have to get some and give it a
try.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers sent my way on this.

Hey, DeeTee,
I get congested sinuses if I have too many dairy products.  I tried
too many the last couple of weeks and will have to back down to none,
for a while and start over with just one item.  It happens.  I've
never tried the Lactaid, but have enough medicines now.

Good luck

Sinus congestion is generally accepted as a sign of a true allergy.  That's
my response to too much dairy too - and "too much" isn't very much!  LOL
Seriously, sinus congestion is a physical response to the release of
histamine which is an allergic response, not a lactose intolerance response.
In fact, I just found this website
http://www.lactose.co.uk/lima/symptoms.html and DeeTee's trouble may be an
allergy as well, rather than a lactose problem.

(lactose intolerance is such a buzz word these days, most of the general
public thinks that's my problem when I say I'm allergic to milk and they try
to fix me up (nice of them, but wrong problem!).  Conversely, doctors always
ask for my symptoms when I tell them and not a one of them has disagreed with
the "allergy" assessment.  Oh, and I've changed docs a lot lately thanks to
moving 3 times in 5 years - milk allergy label still sticks.)

Well, that's what happens to me. I get so congested that I start coughing to
clear it. I find a Benedryl helps a whole lot more than the Lactaid.
Although, I do use the Lactaid occasionally to avoid the runs from milk
products. Sigh. I love cold milk.

My reaction closed my throat, swelled tongue, couldn't hear. I was fortunate
as the Dr in ER that day was the local allergist and he knew what to do.
Haven't had a glass of milk in 19 years. Can have a bit of butter in mashed
potatoes as long as it isn't more than once a week. Yuppers, I keep a very
close eye on what has milk/products in it. Sad part is, it happened the
weekend before DD's 7th HB. She cried when she realized I couldn't have ice
cream on her HB.

I find I get on much better with goat's milk and cheese than cow's.

It's good to know the cause has been narrowed down!  Best of luck in find
your tolerance level without too much more coughing.

Oh, I just found this site http://www.lactose.co.uk/lima/symptoms.html in
answering Loujean.  You might have a true milk allergy rather than a lactose
intolerance, in which case the Lactaid won't help - you'll just have to avoid
milk products for the most part.  Join the club - I love milk, too and have
been off it for almost 40 years now.  Sorry to see you in the clubhouse!

Looking back to when I was in the Navy, they had the best tasting
coldest milk!  It came in big plastic bags inside of cardboard boxes.

Will take a look at the site, thanks.

Dee Tee,

I feel for you with the milk intolerance. I have it too. It is hard me being
a rodent (squirrel) and being related to rats, I love cheese. But such is
life. I hope you do well with eleminating (sp) milk from your diet so that
you don't have to cough so much. You take care
