Total Knee Revision

Sunny52 - 24 Apr 2006 18:19 GMT I finally have a date for surgery; Thursday, April 27th. The doctor is still not sure if I will need a partial or a full revision. Either way, I have a full six weeks pf physical therapy to look forward to. I was wondering if it is beneficial to go to a rehab hospital after the surgery. Does anyone have experience with a rehab facility following TKR or TKR revision surgery?
Thanks.
Bonnie
Jan O'Keeffe - 24 Apr 2006 20:55 GMT Bonnie- Had my 2 TKRs a month apart. Had 3 home health visits after number 1 and no PT after the second one. My best advice is to use the over-the-bed-tray-table. As soon as they get you up, start putting your foot on the rung across the bottom of the table and use your arms to pull your foot toward you--you'll get good bending right away. I am totally not able to use crutches, walker, etc. because my worst joints have always been hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Good luck. Jan O'

Was your Mom moving more easily when she arrived home after two weeks?
Bonnie
Navy1 - 25 Apr 2006 22:07 GMT Most definitely. The home nurse and physical therapist both said she was recovering quite well. She moved much more easily. She used to take about 4 or 5 starting pushes before she could stand up from a chair. Now she's able to do it better. If she's tired, she may have to try a couple times, but most of the time, she can just stand up.

>Thanks, LouJean. > >Was your Mom moving more easily when she arrived home after two weeks? > >Bonnie Nann Bell - 25 Apr 2006 19:24 GMT Best of luck with the surgery, Bonnie, and remind us again just beforehand so we can crank up the ASA healing machine.
My mom also did inpatient rehab for 2 weeks post-op. She lived alone (though she'd made arrangements to ahve someone stay with her) and had a lot of weakness from polymyalgia at the time, so her PCP wanted her to stay in for rehab initially. She was in a special rehab unit of the hospital though, not a nursing home. So if you can get a rehab unit it might be beneficial. She says they did spend a lot of time working with her and she was probably able to move on to other or more execises sooner than she would have at home as she could wear herself out more than she could at home! (sshe would have been very compliant in home rehab, but one just does have other chores to do at home that one doesn't ahve in the hospital!)

I have to be at the hospital tomorrow at 5:30am! I guess it's better to be the first OR case, but I'll be leaving the house around 4am, and that's way too early for me!!!
Healing vibes and prayers to everyone in need.

tsedinger@yahoo.com - 26 Apr 2006 14:35 GMT Good luck! I'm glad you're going first. Waiting is the worst. My hip surgeries were at noon so I had a lot of time to be hungry, tired, dying for a cup of coffee, and just plain worrying.

I came home yesterday a little battered, and very sore.
Jan,using the tray table was a great suggestion! I sat at the edge of the bed and put my foot on the rung of the table, and I tried to pull it a little closer to the bed each day.
Duckie, I'm going to try using my husband's rocker glider today.
The hospital looked into Rehab and discovered I would have to go to a local nursing home. I wanted no part of that, so I opted for home services which begin today.
Thanks to everyone for their prayers, good thoughts, wishes and suggestions. I'll try to keep you posted.
Love, Bonnie
Duckie - 04 May 2006 10:37 GMT So glad we could give you the heads up about 'rehab'. I will opt out of that for the future. If I lived alone, I might choose nursing home but I don't. When I felt like it I marched around and around the inside of the house. Unfortunately, sometimes I found myself having to do that because the leg jerks I get [restless leg syndrome] reared itself after the knee replacement and that was a nightmare. Only way I could get it to stop was to walk it off. That continued for several months. Boy, right after the surgery when the leg didn't want to bend and the leg jerks... I kept screaming out in pain until I could stand and walk. Getting up was an effort too but all of that passes. Dancing on this baby now. lol Duckie

Lol I know only too well about the challenges in getting up... I was stuck in my husband's rocker glider and could not get up. My husband tried to help me up and every time I started to rise out of the chair and lean forward, the chair went backwards. He couldn't hang on to me and hold the chair at the same time. Soon I was laughing too hard and had jelly legs.
I cannot dance well, but I hope to be walking better by the end of the month.

Duckie - 05 May 2006 08:48 GMT Isn't that the worst!! Really hard to explain to someone who hasn't been there. RLS is bad enough on a regular basis but with a knee that doesn't want to bend and it suddenly bends on its own and violently. ouchie doesn't cover it. lol Duckie

sigh....... in some households when the wife says she feels twitchy, the husband thinks things are going to get interesting <weg>, not that the leg muscles are freaking out.

Thanks, Jo. I am exercising every day, and still struggling to get the knee to bend beyond 95 degrees. Not sure what to do next?!
I wish I could get your luck to change, you and Jim need a break!!
Please take of yourselves.

Nanny - 23 May 2006 01:56 GMT Bonnie, when I had my TKR, the worst shock for me post-surgery was to realize that even though my brain was sending a message to my leg to raise it, there was no response! I was soooo relieved to be able to do leg raises again later. Nanny

I have had three knee surgeries, and I have noticed that the muscles never respond the same after surgery. I never had trouble doing straight leg raises until I tried to raise my leg into the CPM machine three days after surgery. I was sure my leg was a 12 inches off he bed, but the therapist said I was raising it about 4 inches! lol
