My good friend, Polly, who is a nurse at my doctor's office, had her first
seizure yesterday about 10 minutes before she would have had her two girls
in the car to go to daycare.  At the hospital they found that she had a
deformity on one side of her brain, and the seizure was triggered by sleep
deprivation and exhaustion.  She was given a practically new medicine (so
her mom said), Trileptal, which can have bad side effects (she didn't say
what they were).  I told her I would see if anyone one here who had had
seizures knew anything about this med and side effects.  They are Christians
and thank God that the seizure happened when it did, and are praying for few
side effects.  Polly will not be able to drive for 6 months; her mother is a
bookkeeper in the same doctor's ofice and they live near each other so it
could be much worse.  Polly will probably ride with Beth to and from work.
The girls are 1 and 4 so it will be hard for her to get the rest the doctor
said she had to have!  Any information will be much appreciated.

I also have seizures and have been on trileptal for almost 2 years.  I
take 900 mgs a day.  It has stopped the seizures completely with no side
effects for me.  Hope that helps.

Ellie, I'll pass that good news on to Beth for Pollie.  Thanks.

Gwen,

Sorry to read about your friend.  I hope that the med works for her.

Hi Gwen, as you know Rachel has epilepsy. She's been on Trileptal for over 2
years now, with minimal side effects, and those were all at the beginning.

I hope your friend responds well to treatment and doesn't have any more
problems.

Don't know that drug as I have been on a very old drug for a very long
time -- 40 years give or take a year or two. My daughter was born while
I was on this medication and I know what you mean about tired. I did
have to have my hubby help when things were really bad. Being deprived
of sleep did set off my petite mal. When she had finished nursing and
was a bit older, I always took a nap. I even took a nap when she didn't
want to take one. I had a wooden puzzle for her that was a clock. I
would put the hands on that puzzle to the time she could come wake me
and then set it next to the kitchen clock. When the two looked alike,
she could come but not before unless something really was wrong.
Defining really took time but she finally got it. Course that was long
before digital clocks. lol
But with two children that is much harder. She might consider finding a
young teen who could play with them while she takes a nap. Basically a
baby-sitter without you leaving the house.
Here is hoping the new drug works right away and she doesn't have to
spend a long time looking for the right drug if this one proves to not
work right away.

I only had one set of seizures.  They put me on Trileptal.  I don't
remember any side effects.  I, too, couldn't drive for 6 months.  That
was quite a shocker.  I've never had seizures before and haven't had
any since I have been on the Trileptal, so can't guarantee that the
medicine stopped them.  I believe my seizures were due to stress.
Thank God that Polly had the seizure before she got in the car.  It's
extremely lucky that she has some one who works near her.  I took
three months sick leave and then moved my retirement up.  After I
could drive again, they hired me back as contract worker, days and
hours up to me.  I finally retired complete this past January.  I am
67 and just got tired of working.  I loved my job and the people I had
to work with.  The company was great and very supportive, and I had
been there for 25 years, but I felt like it was time to stay home.  I
have my 88 year old mom to help me, so it worked all right.  I also
have a very dear friend who is also retired who would take me to
doctor's appointments, etc.
