JP Minor!  I wore these awhile back and now am missing them.  They are
mug ugle and expensive but orthodics worked beautifully with an extra
large toe box.

Good luck,

Yes.
Look for the PW Minor brand for an extra depth orthopedic shoe. You
may also be able to wear a New Balance shoe because they come in
widths up to 5x, and do have a wider toe box.

Check out http://www.pwminor.com/Products/Category1.aspx
for information about PW Minor. Of course it is important to have your
shoes fitted by someone who knows about problem feet.

My blue cross does not, unless the shoes are custom made.
(I am in Canada.) I think that is ridiculous, because custom made
shoes are in the thousands of dollars, and if a premade pair work just
as well that should be a consideration.

I'm doing G-R-E-A-T!   I'm gonna finally have the metatarsal surgery on
April 28th.   They're going to remove the heads on the metatarsals on my
right foot so that my toes will finally be able to touch the ground.
Hopefully this will end the severe pain in the ball of my foot and the
nodules on my toes.   The podiatrist is estimating 6-weeks recovery, but by
then the weather will be warm and my wife and I will be able to "scoot"
around town on our Honda Reflex scooters that we bought last fall.

As far as New Balance (and their sister company, Dunham)... I've never had a
problem returning shoes if they didn't fit "just right" and the folks at
customer service as so helpfull.   They might cost a bit more, but it well
worth it.

I hope all is well with you too.  I promise to check in to ASA more often!

I can't find my shoes to check the name but they are prophet I believe.
They have the same depth as the Minor's, are a bit cheaper I believe and
have the neophrene top which with the spasticity in my feet I need.  I hope
this helps. Oh and 2 removeable insoles so I can adjust as I need and still
fit my orthotic if I can ever stand them with the spasticity.

I have several pairs of Propet shoes.  I love them because
the toe box is usually quite wide and so much more comfortable for my feet.

I purchase the shoes from www.zappos (no shipping charge and no shipping
charge if you have to return them).

Kate,

I'm not sure if all states do things the same way, but here in Michigan,
if a podiatrist sees you and you have either diabetes or rheumatoid
arthritis, the podiatrist can prescribe some shoes for you and medicare
and many private insurances will pay for most or all of the cost of a
pair of shoes.   I think it is for one pair of shoes per year or two.

Might be worth doing some checking into as well as finding a reputable
podiatrist.

Good luck!

I think this may be a medicare thing. I was told since I have diabetes that
medicare would pay for a pair of shoes for me each year.  I went to a
prosthesis place and they fitted me with inserts and also shoes. It didnt
cost me not 1 dime. Now let me tell you they arent the most beautiful,
stylish shoes but they are wide and deep.

Oooh, you did good.   I used to work with a young fellow half my age that
hobbled around twice as much as I did.   He did what you did for all his
shoes for about $400 total and he was like a kid again after about a month.

Search New Balance Web Express for shoes with "Shoe Last" of SL-2, AL-2 or
CL-2 (extra depth).

I've always had a difficult time finding shoes that are wide and deep enough
for my feet (Size 13, 6-E width, SL2 depth).  I've got feet like a Duck!
LOL!

For althletic shoes, it's always New Balance.   For dress/casual shoes, it's
always Dunham.

Once in a great while, I'll find something wide/deep enough at some of the
department stores and/or local shoe stores... but  I usually have to
special-order my shoes.

Good Luck at finding the perfect pair of shoes.  :-)

Here's a tip... I have a few nodules on my toes that hurt really bad.
After putting on my socks, I stick a thick bunion pad (the ones with the
hole in it) on the *outside* of my sock over the nodule.   This way it
doesn't irritate my skin and they aren't difficult to remove.

I LOVE the SL-2 New Balance shoes.  These shoes actually are deeper because
they are designed for high arches though, so I'm not sure they'd be much help
with the toe problem.  (I just got a new Arthritis Today with shoe
recommendations in it and was EXTREMELY disappointed not to see New Balance
under their athletic shoes.  They offer more fitting options than any other
athletic shoe company and certainly should be on the radar for anyone with
arthiritic feet, IMNSHO.)

but after my rant, I was looking closer at the article again and they do
mention an athletic shoe that has true double-depth to accomodate orthotics -
the Etonic Pro Support MC 110.  It sounds like a good shoe.  Here's a link to
it on Etonic's site, but I found their website to be fancy to the point of
being annoying and not as informative as I might like.  But it's a place to
start and you might find more through Google if youlike the sound of the
shoe.

Ooooh, do the cleaning infront of this person while humming a tune that
might apply. LOLOL  The best Christmas present that I ever got was a
keyboard condom.  With it in use, I have used the same keyboard for 3-4
years.   It does not help with catching a virus or things like that but
grankids and morning coffee it does the job.  :-)

Hey,

I'm newish here and a major lurker, and I've only had R.A. for a year
but
my .02 is this Crocs.

I have been unable to wear my own shoes for months.  (I'm in a flareup
and am only on MTX.  There are some other health issues that my RD
is concerned about.)  Anyway, I digress.  I don't have alot of money to
outlay so I went and tried the Crocs.  I got them two sizes too large,
but there is alot of room for my toes.  That is good news for me as
I cannot stand anything putting any pressure on them at all.
Now, lemme say, the crocs are ugly.  But you can get some jibbitz
to spice up their personality.  I'm looking forward to the day
I can put my pre-R.A. shoes on.  Who knows, it could happen right?

Newsgroup Spambuster - 17 Apr 2006 04:47 GMT
Hi Erin,

You don't say where you live, but here in Michigan, Crocs have become
_THE_ latest thing around here.   Everyone is wearing Crocs and just
about every catalog and store has jumped on the bandwagon.   I don't
really think they are all that ugly, and if you are the fun type, they
come in about 20 different brite colors and a few not so bright colors
like navy and black,  and several different styles if you look on their
website.

Unfortunately for me, I can't wear them more than a couple of hours
before they hurt my feet something fierce.  Not enough support for me in
the Crocs.

So far, New Balance is the best for me, but as we all well know,
everyone is different and different shoes will satisfy different folks.
I would say 90% of the time these days I am in a pair of New Balance.
Like others have mentioned here, I also have a pair of casual dress
shoes to wear with slacks and such and they are from the P. Minor
company that is listed earlier in this thread.

Two other places that I find hard to find sizes, wide widths, deep toe
box, etc are at www.footsmart.com and www.eastbay.com   Both companies
are good to deal with and I have never had a problem with either of
them.

Hey, Erin, I''m not one to tell you to give up on those shoes!  I've moved my
former dress shoes twice since I was last able to wear any of them with
regularity.  Modify that - I moved the best quality and most comfortable of
my dress shoes, donated the others.  I've worn one pair for about 2 hours
during the last 4 years, but I can't give up on all of them yet.......
