i finally got used to using the neti pot last year and it definitely
helped. now that pollen time is here, i want to use it again, but have
a question. for those of you who use distilled water, how do you get it
warm? for those of you who don't, do you just use warm tap water? i was
reading about lead in the hot water in this area, so am reluctant to do
that.

I don't use distilled water, but I noticed at Christmas that my brother
heats the water he uses in the microwave in a glass measuring cup.  I
was a little surprised - I'd probably managed to scald my sinuses if I
did it that way!  LOL  But he said through trial and error one day he'd
learned the right settings on his home microwave and fortunately
Mother's was similar enough for the same settings to work.

I still stick to tap water, myself.  The water here has lots of crud in
it, but to the degree that it has to go through a water softener before
it enters the house pipes so I'm hoping that's clean enough.  Though
come to think of it, we are putting drinking water through the filter
pitcher.  sigh..... you've given me something to think about.

having to go through Google!

I, too, just use warm tap water, so don't really have any special prep
to do.   I also use a product called simply saline when I am away from
home.   This product was recommended to me by my lung doctor and comes
in various sizes of cans.   It is a sterile saline solution that can
either be used as a saline nasal spray for moisturizing, or as a nasal
wash just by pressing the button on the can a certain way.   This works
very nicely, but is not heated.

Good luck to you Diane!

i use distilled water in my neti pot, diane.  i microwave the pre-measured
distilled water for about 30-45 seconds (you'll have to tweak that time to
suit your preferences and microwave) and then, i let it sit so that the
molecules have time to settle out.  it is not wise to put *anything* into
your body that has been microwaved and has not had the time to allow the
molecules to settle.

Diane I used warm tap water sometimes filtered and sometimes not. In the
MA house, we had Pur filters on the bathroom and kitchen sink. They just
screw on and you flip up or down the unit to filter the water. [Aside
here -- used the kind once that had the knob - it was awful for these
fingers.] Check the side of the box - I think it filtered lead but can't
remember. It would be an easy fix. You are not suppose to run hot water
through it be tepid would be okay.

Sorry to add another question, but what should I know if I want to go out
and purchase a netti pot?

adelle, i got a simple white ceramic neti pot at a whole foods store.
it has instructions with it, but i also got a lot of help from this
group. several people gave long detailed instructions (you might google
for them, about a year and a half ago, i'd say). it is not really the
most pleasant thing in the world, but once you get the hang of it, you
realize it really is helping.

Yep - at first it has that same feeling that getting pool water up your
nose does but it passes. My mother never did get the hang of it --
panics. She gets sinus stuff followed by bronchitis and once by
pneumonia. But she is now 88 and stubborn so that pot will never be used.

I actually use a related product called the rhino horn.  It is shaped to fit
the nostril and I find it much easier to use for that reason.  My brother
used to use an ear syringe until I told him about the rhino horn - may have
shown him too, don't recall.  He bought one and loves it and it finally got
my SIL irrigating her sinuses to ease congestion related to severe dental
problems.  I'm too lazy right now to look up sites, but you'll find them if
you google "rhino horn sinus irrigation".

Thanks, everyone! I did the ear syringe thing almost a decade ago when
recurrent sinus infections were a problem. Sinuses have been worse this year
than they have been in a long time, so I wanted to try it again. I'll check
out both neti pots and rhino horn. Are they easier to keep clean than the
syringe. Mine started to smell musty/mildewy  after not too long, which is
why I want to try something else.

the ceramic pot is a snap to keep clean.

I haven't had any trouble keeping the rhino horn clean and I'd suspect the
same is true with the neti pot.  Generally I just rinse it out and off
immediately after use and leave it sitting out in the bathroom and it air
dries sufficiently.  If I suspect I have some respiratory bug, I'll use a bit
of soap on the tip to get rid of germs.  I've had the horn for 2.5 years now
with no trouble except it getting dusty on the rare occasions that I don't
use it for a couple of weeks!  LOL
