What a nightmare. New computer is in the house and the old one on a Fed
Ex truck headed to somewhere in the south - TN I think. Who cares. lol
Took me one solid week to load back my software and make all of it play
nicely with each other. I am still seeing issues but guess what.
This new computer has a key :; which fell off - well up -- two days
after it arrived. Great. My personal tech guy today told me I would need
to send it back to have the keyboard replaced. Told him I would call him
at the end of April. I am teaching a small one time online class which I
do need to prep for and that requires a computer. Adam told me to call
him when I was done with the class. Told him I would call late April.
Also told him I was removing the hard drive so no one could mess up what
it took 7 days to fix.
Glad to be back in touch. Now just need to find my sig line and install
it in this reader. BTW, the new netscape does not have the
mail/newsgroup thing so had to uninstall 8.1 and install 7.1 to get it.
Been doing a lot of that this week.

Good to see you, though.

ROFL!!! Still have a LOT of boxes in the garage and we've started looking at
houses in the area. Found one we really, really like, but now I can't bring
it up on the MLS. I hope, I hope, I hope it has not already been sold!!
We'll find out in a few days. Until then we'll just hang in there because we
are on a lease here until August so can't really do anything anyway. Bob
says that is why we should not even look - we'll find something, fall in
love with it and then lose it 'cause we're not yet available.

Glad to hear everything is going so well for you.

I keep thinking if we find a house that needs a great deal of work, at
least we would have a house over our head while workmen are tearing the
other apart. rofl of course we looked at one this weekend that needed
fixing and they were asking 969,000 for it. Should have been more like
740,000 tops. Oh well.
I think looking helps you know what you don't want. At least that is my
excuse.

With the market as insane as it is out here, looking is the only way to get
a feel for what the price really should be.

It isn't easy to find good contractors for remodeling, so you will need
extra time so you can be choosy about who you use.

Also keep an eye on the paper for the list of properties sold and the
selling price.

I routinely go into shock at what neighboring houses have been selling for.
My backyard might be kind of a mess but apparently it's worth a fortune.

Jo
Duckie - 06 Apr 2006 06:43 GMT
Good news is that it is taking more time to sell and the prices they
start at are 50% of the time needing to be lowered. Hope that figure
moves to more like 75% of the time. Having time to be choosey is the
best about all this.
Thanks for the heads up on the contractor issue.

Good to see you Duckie! Ever try a ghost program to back up your hd. Very
fast and simple to restore from the ghost.

The ghost program makes an identical compressed copy of what ever drive you
tell it to do, formatting and all!
You could use your external drive to store the back-up. Next crash, new
drive, virus, whatever, you can reinstall the ghost file and viola!
Everything is as it was at the time you made the ghost. It is something
similar to Xp's restore function, but way, way better. They have their own
boot program which frees access to your own boot drive for copy/restore
functions.

One of the "maybe I don't need it after all" excuses to not buy a new
computer is all that uninstalling & installing programs, etc.  I find
that the new one never quite looks like the old one and I have to
familiarize myself with where the programs are in the menu, etc.  I'm
sorry you had a bit of trouble, (heck - lots!) and hope you get it all
straightened out.

>>We have unpacked all we are going to. How are you two doing?
Duckie <<

we are grand. . . but still not unpacked. we need built-in bookshelves
and since i'm currently without a contract, we're afraid to spend the
$$. so we have a gazillion boxes of books in the garage. and all the
cds and stuff still in boxes as we wait for the "media wall" to be
built (a couple more months). and all my wall art is still in boxes.
john is working in a whole new direction in his art photography and
we're waiting to redo the living room before hanging any of it. so a
lot of wait, wait, wait. and RA run amok at the top dose of remicade,
and john's crohns acting up. aren't you glad you asked?? but we're both
very happy and love NC.

how are your neighbors? how do you like CA?

You sound like us.  Were not happy till we have a project list of things to
be done.  Preferably a circular list where each project cannot be settled
until another one is dealt with.  So nothing can be done first.

Ouch to no contract, bigger ouch to RA running amok and poor John with
his Crohn's. NC is a great state -- met my John there while in college
-- blind date.
CA is great. People keep telling us that all this rain is really
unusual. I keep saying at least you don't have to shovel it. And I have
been in sandels since we arrived. Next year I will think it is cold but
right now 50 seems really warm. Coldest it got was 35. When we left
Boston it was 3. Flowers have been blooming in the yard since we
arrived. Not sure how you can tell it is spring if blooming flowers is
not the guide. John is settling in more slowly but that doesn't surprise
me. We get to see Jen and Jeff about once a week. In fact just ate
dinner at their place tonight.
Neighbors are mostly women - lol  A new couple just moved in next door
so finally a man in the neighborhood. Hoping once it gets what is
considered warm here we can have the whole lot over for outside grazing.

These are the walking jackets I got for my two. If fitted correctly
there is no way to escape from them. Those figure 8 ones my two managed
to wiggle and twist and back right out of. Collar types pulled right
off. If I had to -- all I had to do was grab a handful of the jacket and
lift it. They wore them for the full weekend the time we drove to Maine
with them screaming the whole way.

Great invention there, Duckie, by whomever designed it.  The only
traveling I had to do with my cat was to the vets, as he detested the
car.  The dog, no problem;  I just had to put his stuff in a bag, or
just get his leash, and he was ready to go!  Did they scream in the
same pitch?  LOL

Hmmmm, I'll keep it in mind.  So far he hasn't figured out how to escape the
H-harness, but he isn't too happy about going in it!  LOL tried to put it on
him for a while just around the house this evening, but he'd escape each time
I almost had it buckled.  Well, it won't be nice enough outside to take him
out again for a few days, so we'll bide our time.

On the positive side, he passed his first vet visit with good marks.  Returns
in two weeks for booster shots and to become an "IT".  Mike's been working on
our 2005 taxes and the first quarterly filing for 06 and keeps wondering if
we can't somehow claim vet bills as medical  expenses.  LOL

but even that takes some effort.  Once it's on, he's ok with that, but going
