Had my 6 month check. Since I haven't been doing as well lately, doc decided
to do some blood work before changing my meds. He wondered whether I had a
vitamin D deficiency, since that can cause a lot of the same symptoms.
Bingo!
Called his office, as requested on the lab report, but got the machine. Will
wait to see what he wants to do (took a multivitamin and calcium plus D, in
the meantime.).
Looked up the deficiency on the web and found I already eat a lot of foods
high in D, so am not sure what's up. I do stay inside a lot - it's damned
cold here in New England in the winter!!!!

I had a conversation with a pharmaceutical-type guy at a Christmas party
a few years ago in which he was talking about the law of unintended
consequences. Apparently Vit. D deficiency is way up, probably because
of the proliferation of sun screens. It seems it's not enough to be out
in the sun, you have to be *exposed* to the sun! So, if you wear makeup
that has sunscreen in it, your need for Vit. D would increase. Or
something like that. (It *was* at a party!)

I'm taking 10,000 units of Vit. D. three times a week because of a
deficiency. My levels were minus 7. This came about when the
endocrinologist ran tests to see why my parathyroid intact hormone was
so high. Interesting stuff and I'm learning more about it as I go
along. I don't feel much different but have only been on this rx for a
couple of weeks.

Oops, I mis-typed. It's 50,000 units, not 10,000 that I take three
times a week.

I take 2,000 IU of Vitamin daily. The recommended dose is something like 200 or
400 IU which is not nearly enough. I took part in a study done by my MS clinic
and they recommend at least 800 IU a day. They think there is a correlation
between lack of sun/Vit. D and MS. The safe daily dose is much higher than what
I take. I'll see if I can find information on it.

Adelle, hope whatever he decides you need to do will work quickly and you
will begin to feel much better real soon.

At least the seasons are in your favor right now. Have to wonder if the
lack of vit D makes SAD worse.
It doesn't take a lot of sunlight to give you the Vit D you need. Five
minutes three times a day even just on your face and arms may be enough.

Thanks to all who answered!
Joan, Ann - do you need an rx for such high doses of vit D?
Well, I'll bet this has been 'building' awhile now. When I was on doxy, I
got terrible rashes from sun exposure, so I either stayed in or wore SPF 45.
I was on doxy for over two years.
Then I switched to the Plaquenil and felt OK for the summer, but stayed
indoors when it was hot/humid (fairly often) because my asthma acted up, so
I didn't build up all that much over the summer (and still wore sunscreen a
good portion of the time).
By the time fall was really underway and it got cold, I entered hibernation
mode. And the 'discomfort' got incrementally worse. Now I understand why.
The doc didn't call back today, though.

It's OTC here in Canada. But there can be side effects to any vitamin, so as
long as you check with a doctor I'm happy.

Adelle I have an rx for the Vit D. I'm supposed to be on it short-term.
She said probably a couple of months. Will have another blood test in
four weeks.

Adelle, I hope the doctor is able to work this out and you are feeling
better soon.
Yes, it has been really cold in NE this winter. Not as much snow as
last year, but lots of ice and cold weather.

I read somewhere that a small amount of vitamin D must be gotten from
the sun. Otherwise, all the pill type doesn't work. Does anybody
have any further information on this?
