I came here few months ago, and got some real good advice, I finally went to
see for the fist time a Rheumatologist yesterday,
Looking at my Xrays, he told me I had extensive degeneration on both hips
and spine, something about L5, bone to bone, for the past few months the
pain was very bad, the only medication I was taking was Motrin 800mg 3 times
a Day.
He told me something that left me puzzled and yes I asked a lot of
questions, he says that he might be something else than osteoarthritis,
because of the symmetry of the of the damage, I had some blood work done, do
you have any idea what he might be looking for?
He put me on two new meds, Voltaren 75mg twice a Day and Neurotin, I have
not started Neurotin, reading the side effects sheet, I am scared to death,
and also give me two shots of cortisone.
Any feedback will be welcome.
Kiki.

He is likely looking for inflammation. Arthritis can be caused by
your immune system malfunctioning, for some reason your immune system
will attack the joints and cause inflammation. The inflammation
sometimes shows up in blood tests, there are certain antibodies that
are associated with certain types of inflammatory arthritis (arthritis
caused by the immune system). Rheumatoid arthritis is one of types
that is caused by the immune system, but there are many others. Your
Dr will be able to sort this out from the blood tests and symptoms you
have. -- MZ

Thank you Mary,
Yes he did talked about inflammation, the shot he gave me at two places,
did worked, but only for two Days.
So I hope Voltaren will help.
Take care,
Kiki

It is also possible that you may have an infection in the area.
I don't know if neurontin would help for bone on bone pain, but I
took it for nerve pain in my arms and it worked wonderfully for me.
I had to get off it because I started on antidepressants and I couldn't take
both.

Gary,
Thank you for the input, I am taking Prozac, have not start the Neurotin, I
remember asking the doctor if it was safe to take with my other meds, he
told me yes.
Which antidepressant are you taking?
Take care,
Kiki.

I was on prozac when I was on Neurontin. Just added to the sleepiness
it caused when I first started it. Stay close to bed the first few days
as it will make you sleepy. Start with a low dose and go up is what my
dr had me do to minimize the effects of the fatigue. After 3-4 days I
was fine but I took it around 8 at night so I wasn't too groggy in the
morning. Worked great for nerve pain. DianeW

Hi Kiki,
I went back and researched the neurontin and for the life of me can't find
or remember
why I had to stop taking it! Perhaps I just didn't need it anymore as I was
able to
tolerate my arm pain quite nicely with the antiD's. That part is past though
and I generally
take a hydrocodone each to accomplish that. Perhaps I can go back onto the
neurontin.
I'll check with the psych next time I see him. The hydroC increases chance
of gastro bleeding
that should not be a problem with the neurontin. Sorry for the bad advise.
Thanks for covering my butt DianeW!

No problem Gary, I go nuts every time I have to start a new med, I'm afraid
of the side effects, and should never read the list of it, and when I
finally start taking it, I am waiting for the slightest symptom.
