Update: My Spring Break and how it disappeared

I spent most of the past week travelling, and somehow my week off has
gone far too quickly.

On Saturday I went with my middle sister to visit my eldest sister who
is still in the hospital recovering from post tkr infection. She had
another surgery to drain the sinus of infection that developed around
her incision. Since she is not at a hospital near home, she is very
lonely so we have tried to go see her when we can.

Sunday and Monday I spent in Vancouver. It is one of the most
beautiful cities on the planet, I believe but somehow its image is
tarnished from the large number of homeless people, and those that
stand on the corners and beg. My hotel room is near the downtown area;
it is a nice hotel and it makes me sad that around that particular
hotel there are so many street people.

I visit the man who will make my new shoes from scratch. He is
concerned that changes in my foot mean that the orthoses that I have
are no longer suitable. He takes measurements and we proceed, but I
will see if I can get my orthotics updated before the final shoe
fitting.

Tuesday I am home. I need the rest and a chance to catch my breath.
The week before spring break has been particularly busy and I have not
had a chance to catch up on tasks at home. My eye appointment is in
the afternoon, and the results are that my vision has changed and
lenses will need to be strengthened. The cost will be in the ballpark
of $650 just for lenses. I can not afford new frames at this time. I
can not imagine what the cost would have been if I had decided to get
new glasses and frames.

There is a message that I do not have to attend court next week, as
the perpetrator MAY plead guilty. They will let me know.

Since I am no longer required to attend the court briefing it is back
to Langley to visit eldest sis. She is in tears. Her knee which looked
as though it was finally healing, is once again becoming infected.
She needs another surgery and is scheduled to go to the OR at five.
Five and six and seven oclock go by. At seven thirty she gets the
message that there has been an emergency, and she will have to wait
for the morning. Another sinus cavity is devveloping and they will be
removing it before it gets worse once again. This is about the fifth
or sixth surgery following her tkr in September.

We are late getting home.

Early Thursday morning we are back on the road and I am  headed for my
rheumy apponitment. He thinks I am doing well, and looking better than
he has ever seen me. He looks into my elbow pain and discusses whether
I want to see a surgeon. I tell him no, that I will wait. I have to
much that I have to do that I need the strenght for and can not lose
function.

My foot though, is another matter. He is concerned when he sees the
exray but believes that it can be surgically repaired. He suggests
that i see a particular foot surgeon that is especially skiilled at
foot reconstruction. The big problem though is that there is a very
long waiting list (three years). He believes though that this is the
man I need to see.

I will wait. My family doc has lead me to believe that nothing can be
done, so I am relieved to know that there is something that may help.
For now I can manage the pain. It is not terrible when I am wearing
shoes or walking on carpet. It feels like i am walking on a large
pointed rock if i am walking on bare floor. I will avoid going
barefoot.

Today has been another catch up day but it too has slipped away.

Rose...I cannot imagine that your Big Sis is at all pleased with her TKR...I
am sure that when this is all just a horrible memory and she is enjoying the
benefits...the nightmare will start to wane...Sending her lots of Hugs and
prayers...
3 years seems a like a lifetime to wait when you are the one that is in
pain...Sending you lots of hugs and prayers too...

Thank-you Vickie, Harve, and Cindy.

I am hopeful that this last surgery will be the end of the infection.
The good thing is htat she is in the hospital and they can treat her
on an on-going basis and before the infection gets too bad again.

For myself, I did not even think there was a surgery that could help
so I believe that I will be fine even if it takes a long time. The
rest of me has improved so at this stage the foot pain  is not to the
stage that I can not tolerate it.

Rose, your poor sister.  I know she is most discouraged about her knee and
you can't blame her.  I do hope and pray that this surgery will be the last
one needed.  Maybe they need to keep her on antibiotics for three or four
months to eliminate the infection.  You must be worn out from your very busy
week.  Hope everything works out well with all your problems.
