OTP - Mom's cancer is 'back'

Hi!

Have been lurking. Saying prayers for those in need; and the need seems to
be pretty great lately. Wish everyone was doing better.

My mom was wiping the counter and her collarbone cracked. Turns out there is
a tumor in the bone. As it turns out, there is also a tumor in her arm and
hip. On scan, the one in the hip and in the arm look similar, but the one in
the collarbone looks different, so it is getting biopsied today. They
biopsied the arm two days ago.

Mom had a very rare form of cancer almost three years ago. It was in her
abdomen. But since it had clear margins and no node involvement, there was
no chemo or radiation. The radiologist who did the biopsy two days ago said
that on initial eyeballing, the tumor from her arm looked like a spindle
cell one, which is what she had three years ago.

It turns out her hospitalizations for what we thought was pancreatitis is
consistent with metastases from that original cancer. She can't remember if
she ever told her oncologist about these attacks. Certainly her doctors
never made the connection. Not sure whether its worth getting angry at the
original oncologist - or whether its our own fault for not researching it
more three years ago.

And with one tumor seeming different from the others, we really don't know
what we are dealing with yet. Sigh! Right now, she has a pretty positive
attitude. Like me - a pragmatist who has trouble connecting with the
emotions. That will serve her well for now. We can fall apart later (at
least for a little while) when there are no decisions to be made, and just
treatment to be endured.

She and my sister are also in an initial panic, because they just bought a
big home together and were relying on my Mom's salary for monthly expenses.
The house they wound up with is a two story (it was less expensive than the
ranch style they first contracted for, by 75K), which now means looking into
a chair/lift so my mom won't have to risk the stairs (no place to add a
bedroom downstairs, and no money in which to do it even if there were room)

On top of that, a good friend and neighbor has been battling breast cancer
which they found metastasized to her lungs. Chemo is shrinking those. But it
turns out it's in her brain where the chemo can't reach because of the
blood/brain barrier. She is now getting daily radiation therapy. But this is
a really bad turn of events and doesn't bode well. This woman has four kids,
aged 8 (my son's friend) 15, 19 and 21. She is a nurse who has actually been
working until radiation was started last week, making her too tired. She is
on the school committee of her parish school. She could really use the help
of the prayer machine. Her contributions to the rest of us are just so
special.

SO, prayers for my mom, Dorothy Stavis and my friend, Gail Morse, would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening, guys.

Adelle,

I am so sorry to hear about your Mom and your friend.  It is very very
difficult when you have
had a bout with cancer when you have other problems attacking your body
as well.  It is so difficult
to know whether to  alert your oncologists every time you have an
unusual pain or occurrence.  Not
every ache, pain or illness is related back to the original cancer, but
how as lay people do know?
I don't see how you can blame yourselves for this.

I return next week to do my CT scan to see if my Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma
is still in remission.
My oncologist has pledged to be my primary health guardian.  He has
stopped my wife in the main
hall of the hospital to ask why I am there that day and if I am OK and
he readily shares all of
my information with all of my other doctors.  His nurse does the same
thing and we see her around
various parts of the hospital.

I feel blessed, when we left Ohio I had almost all of my health needs
met by doctors  at the
Cleveland Clinic.  When we moved to Missouri I went to an RD recommended
by my
former RD.  I finally switched all of my major care to Kansas University
Medical Center in Kansas
City Kansas an hour away from us.  I have switched docs there till I
finally have what I consider the
best mix of docs for my care and ones I have great confidence in.

Some find it strange I do this, but for me it works knowing that all my
docs can easily see all of
my records when they are treating me  and I sincerely believe this helps
all of them when they
are diagnosing my plentiful medical problems.  A plus is having all of
my test results, x-rays,
ct scans, mri's and myriad of info on my all on line.

My thoughts and prays go out to all concerned.

Well, when she had her first cancer surgery, we didn't do any research on
our own. If we had, we would have found that almost everyone recommends
follow up chemo and full body scans with this kind of cancer. If is rare and
spreads through the blood, not lymph system. We are blaming ourselves for
not being more proactive and questioning the first oncologists decision to
not do chemo.

oh, dear.  adding both to the prayer list.

It is almost the 2 year anniversary of the death of a buddy from high school
from metastatic breast CA.  She went with all-out aggressive treatment the
moment the lump was found, but to no avail.  ahhhh, cancer is such a battle
for everyone.

Its so awful.

Gail's wasn't found until it was already in her lungs. She is now getting
chemo and radiation for the brain tumors. It's really scary and my gut says
her prognosis isn't good, though obviously, no one is saying that out loud.

My mom is getting on the schedule for radiation treatments. Haven't heard
anything about chemo, yet. But with it in the bones, radiation is done first
to shrink the tumors so they stop undermining the integrity of the bones.

Some things are just so hard.

My uncle (the ped rheumy) has a theory that fatal disease is partly the
world trying to balance its resources and population.

We've come so far in medicine. Sometimes I wonder whether the inscrutability
of cancer is God's way of trying to humble us; to remind us there are things
beyond our control.

Dunno.

Americans usually ingest only two types of carbs dailty.  Ironically there are seven or eight different types of carbs. Now each one of these carbs work by powering your cells. Along with your free radicals and the normal degeneration that all of our bodys go through.  The worlds greatest vitamins.  This is some of the most amazing vitamins I have ever seen infact this has truly been perfected,  This seemingly starts  your cells to react and regen.check out   www.dontforgettotakeyourvitamins.com/davis47087
