Hi guys,

I have been lurking on this newsgroup for about six months now.

I was told I have R.A. last april.  They thought that the R.A. was
inactive
and the pain I was experiencing was strictly from the carpal tunnel I
had.

Well, two surgeries later, needless to say, I have full blown R.A.

I live in a fairly small town and I didn't get along with the only
rheumy in
town that was taking patients.  So I tried to get my family doctor to
manage
it.  He put me on predinasone.  I was working at a nationally known
discount
retailer and I hurt.  I know y'all know what I mean when I say that I
came
home from work, _hurting_.

I asked him to put me on MTX.  I knew from  my reading and this group
that I
needed something more.  Then I realized I desperately needed a rheumy.
So I
now drive the 150 miles to the nearest big city to see a rheumy.

My sister also has R.A.  She was told she had it nearly four years ago
now.
So I knew what it was.  Heck, my dad has gout and O.A.

Anyway, the MTX is not controlling me at all.  I'm depressed and in
terrible
pain usually six days
a week.  I usually manage one day when I don't want to chop off my
hands
from the pain.  I've develloped an eye twitch and a nasty case of
depression.  ( I had to stop working shortly before Christmas last
year. )

Anyway, I doubt I'll post very often if at all.  I just wanted y'all to
know
that most days.  Y'all are the light at the end of my tunnel.  You all
seem
to be coping as well as you can with humor and united solidarity.

Thanks.

Hi dld.  Well, just hearing your story confirms how very important this
newsgroup is to one another!  I know what you mean by a support group being
the "light at the end of the tunnel".  I was only diagnosed with RA about 8
months ago, and am taking MTX and Plaquenil and learning to adjust my life
to what I can and cannot do anymore.  Once you accept that fact, one can
start to move forward again.  I also have Fibromyalgia and Chronic
Myofascial Pain.  Sometimes I wonder what our reward will be in the
afterlife for enduring such long-suffering years of pain.  I know in this
life the reward is giving and receiving support from our sisters and
brothers in pain.  Glad you introduced yourself to the group!  Nanny

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Stick around and ask anything you
want, lurk or partake.

Hi dld,,,,   You did not say how much Methx. you were taking a week.   Have
you tried Arava?  I tried it for a year after Methx. stopped working for me
and the Arava worked well enough for me to paint the outside of my house
after spending several years of not being able to do much with RA.

Hi did!

how often are you able to get over to see your RD?  What does s/he say about
the mtx not holding you?

My RD's main office is 80 miles from us, but luckily he also sees patients
only 30 miles from us twice/month.  Still, we've had to make several trips
for other medical things with me across the state this year.  Those round
trips are adding up!  LOL

I understand how you feel.  I was first diagnosed back in '85 and the
arthritis was *really* raging for a while then.  I will never forget getting
to my car after work and bursting into tears because I couldn't stand the
thought of having to hold onto the steering wheel for the 2 mile drive home.
Did that many nights (I worked evenings).  It sucks.  No internet then of
course, so I read everything I could find in my local library to learn more.
I surely like having this group available now.
