"pay it forward" --- not off topic

d'huit - 28 Feb 2006 05:11 GMT i have 3 cool books in cd sets that i've already listened to. the sweet friend who sent them to me (knowing how difficult holding books has been for me lately, with my injuries and subsequent surgeries), said to find others who love reading and have difficulty holding books and/or reading. she said, "pay it forward" and send these cd-books to those people. she said to ask them to forward these cd-books on to others, with these same difficulties, when they are finished listening to these cd-books.
sooo, i thought---asa is the perfect place to start a "pay it forward cd-book club"!<grin>. doncha think???
i have 3 cd books to start it off with (and add any of your own to the list that you might be willing to part with)---ok. soooo, who wants which cd-book???
"digital fortress", by dan brown; on 5 cds -- it's an intregue about the NSA, a code-breaking machine that runs up against a code it cannot break. the NSA is virtually held hostage, by an unreleased encyption code that could cripple u.s. intelligence. kept me guessing and interested.
"metro girl", by janet evanovich; on 8 cds -- it's a misadventure with high stakes, as the heroine tries to locate her missing brother and runs up against all kinds of unsavory characters, an unexpected partner in the search, murder and cuban secrets. fun romp.
"marker" by robin cook; on 14 cds -- about a medical examiner who tries to unravel why so many young and seemingly healthy people die in various hospitals after successful minor surgeries. her instincts tell her there's a clever healthcare serial killer on the loose, when it doesn't look that way to criminal investigators. fascinating and gripping plot line.

This has prompted my DH to look into making some purchases for this "circulating library".
This could be a whole lot of fun!!

d'huit - 28 Feb 2006 19:49 GMT after i started this thread, i realized it was not really a book club. i like your "circulating library" description better, char. so, "circulating audio library" it is!
btw, i don't want anybody to feel like they have to be in a rush to enjoy these books to send them on quickly. no penalties or deadlines--strictly honor system. if you don't have any cd-books of your own to contribute to the list, that's ok--you can still "borrow" from the list. actually, that's the whole point of this endeavor. hopefully, other asa members do have cd-books they can make available to the book-list.
i'm also thinking taped audio books would be ok, too---so, i'll make a distinction with "T" for cassette tapes and "CD" for cds---if anybody prefers tapes. but that's up to you guys, since this is asa's circulating audio library.
and these audio books can be "borrowed" for friends and relatives, too, who have this kind of need (because of hands being too painful, even temporarily painful, or eyes being too weakened to read a real book). your only committment is to "pay it forward" by sending it directly to the next asa member waiting for it.on the asa waiting list.
i will keep a running list going on asa, under the header of "circulating audio book library", to designate which books are or will be available and who wants which book for when it is available. that way, whomever has a book "checked-out" knows who to send the one they have directly to next asa member on the list. (i don't see why we can't have any member sign up for multiple books on the waiting list, to get the first one available. but please try to keep your requests limited to a few when the list of available audio books grows. that would be helpful.)
i won't keep track of who has which audio-book----that's honor system stuff and you know who you are. just let me know when you do receive one (and i don't need to know which one), so i can drop your name off the waiting list, until the audio-book you have in your possession is available again and sent to somebody else. once you've sent the one you have borrowed, on to somebody else, then go ahead put in your requests for different books on the waiting list.
trying to simplify all of this:
1. don't send your available audio taped books or cds to me, please.
2. do send them directly to whomever is on the waiting list for the title you have in your possession.
3. do let me know which audio books your want to contribute to the list and if they are on tape or cd. just let me know the title, author and how many tapes or cds make up the book. if you want to write a short blurb about it, that's cool, too. i can cut and paste your blurb. you can do this on asa, in the "circulating audio library" thread or by private email.
4. do let me know which audio books you want to be posted on the waiting list for.
5. do let me know when you receive any audio book from the "circulating audio library" waiting list. agian, i don't need to know which book.
6. don't request books or put your name on the waiting list, until you've sent the one you have to somebody else on the waiting list.
7. do clue me in, asap, when you suspect a name on the waiting list is an interloper or non-asa member, you suspect is trying to get something for nothing and not play by the rules. make sure you know what you are telling me is true, first, please. i will revise the list and drop that name from the list, quickly.
8. many of us know each other's snail mail addresses. however, should that not be the case---the person with the available book in possession should contact the waiting list person, by private email, for their mailing address information. a PING-ing of that waiting list person might be helpful to get the ball rolling if their e-addy on group is not accurate.
9. i understand that some audio books will get lost or damaged beyond usability. we all need to understand this and not become attached to the books we've donated to this endeavor. some of us simply cannot afford to replace some of these very expensive audio book sets. no biggie. the damaged or lost book will simply be dropped from the list of availables. if it gets replaced or found again, fine. if not, that's ok, too. i just need to be kept informed that a book needs to be dropped from or added to the list.
agreed????
soooo, which of the 3 cd-books would you like me to send you first, char? i believe i still have your correct snail mail address.<smile>

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 28 Feb 2006 19:30 GMT I do the same thing with peerflix.com only with DVDs. It's awesome and we have seen several movies that we wanted to see but didn't particularly want to buy. So we watch them, then put them back in circulation. We'll take the "Digital Fortress" if you don't mind. Let me know what you have to pay for postage and I'll certianly reimburse you! Thanks, Kate.

I was going to surprise Bob with it, but he said no - let it go to someone who hasn't yet read it.
