Daughter's reaction to Steroid Epidural injections

Hi Everyone,

My Daughter recently had the three injection round of steroid Epidural
injections for her spinal stenosis.  She has had a very strange reaction
to them.  She is having headaches, her legs are swelling and she has
gained about 20 pounds.  Her fellow workers are calling her squirrel
face.  The doctors are giving her Lasix in a attempt to reduce the Edema
in her legs and elsewhere.

She has not been dx'd with RA.  She has fibromyalgia and osteoporosis. I
suspect that  while RA is not showing up,  all her symptoms point to RA.

Has anyone had any similar experiences with the injections?

They did help reduce her pain levels in her neck and shoulders I
recently completed a three round injection series and had no adverse
effects.

Any comments welcomed.

TIA

The headache can be caused by piercing the sac around the spinal nerves
with the needle. The weight gain and swelling are usually caused by the
cortisone.
I would call the doc about the headache and monitor it closely. It
should go away qyickly. The weight could take a few months. Sorry she
is having to go thru this.

Johnie,

I guess I was just shocked at the amount of swelling and eight gain.  I
have taken Prednisone at various dose levels for over 20  years but
never had the weight gain she has had in such a short period of time.
I have had some bad swelling in the past, but not associated with the
epidural injections.

Don

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is going through all this.  I had
an epidural injection in my cervical area last month and had daily
headaches for over two weeks following it. Is she monitoring her blood
pressure?  If it is elevated it can cause headaches. The steroids can
cause elevation in her blood pressure, as does the fluid retention.
The weight gain is probably from the fluid retention primarily.  As far
as the "squirrel face" that is most definitely from the steroids and
should diminish as her system returns to normal.

I hope she is feeling better soon.

Angela,

They told her it may take a year to get back to normal.  Seems like a
very very long time to me.

Don

A year to get back to normal from the reaction she has had or from the
spinal stenosis symptoms?  A year to recover from the injections seems
quite extreme as does the extent of her reaction to the injections.
Twenty pounds is a lot to gain in a short period of time.  From your
post, it seems like they are missing a piece of the puzzle.  How long
has it been since the injections and how far apart were they? Did she
begin having reactions after the first one or has it just been since
the series has finished? Is she on oral steroids? Is she seeing a
rheumatologist? Sorry to be so full of questions but I'm in an
analytical mood tonight and trying to understand what is going on with
your daughter.  I've spent SO much time researching all this stuff, I'd
like to be able to offer something helpful. For the record, I'm not a
doc, just another RA sufferer having lots of "fun" with this body of
mine.  If I can be helpful to someone else, it makes it all worthwhile.

God Bless
Angela
