Any one with psuedogout have trouble with the joint on their thumb...or
finger...I began to have trouble with the upper joint on my left ring finger
tuesday and yesterday evening my right thumb joint became inflamed and
painful.
I don't have RA, so it must be my psuedogout...Also noticed my left
toe...Not the upper joint but the one at the foot...Darn it..That hasn't
bothered me in a while..Thought maybe it had just went away...I have only
had trouble with my knees before...

Oh crap, another disease I never heard of:  psuedogout!  All I know is that
I do have OA & RA, and right now the thumb joint on both hands are giving me
some problems, with pain, as well as swelling.  My doctor did prescribe me
to get personally-designed thumb splints, which I had made at our local
Prothestic office, and BTW, my insurance paid for practically all of the
cost for making me two ($1,000+) for both!  They really do help, and I use
them when my thumbs are at their worst, but since they are made to keep the
thumb joints in a stable position, some things are rather difficult to do
with them on.

So, now, anyone want to educate me on what the heck pseudogout is and where
it attacks?  I did have one flare of what my doctor thought was gout in my
one ankle sometime ago, but it has never re-occurred - yet!  Nanny

I was told I had pseudogout. It differs from gout in that there is an
accumulation of calcium crystals in some joints  rather than uric acid
crystals. It also can affect the wrists and other joints.  I take colchicine
for it. Colchicine is also used to treat gout. Pseudogout  is related to
arthritis.

Thanks for the info, Sheila.  Hope you obtain some relief.  I'm hoping my
thumb joints don't get worse.  The other hand joints don't bother me.  Nanny

miserable aching thumbs are.  i've come to value my thumbs far more since the
pa attacked them!

My wife has one extremely painful thumb joint that a cortisone shot
about once a year takes care of.  It may be calcium of bone spurs but
the doc says that as long as the shot did the trick and she doesn't
have to have them often, he isn't going to look at a more invasive
remedy.

i had high hopes for shots last year when my rd pumped my thumbs full of
cortisone, but there was little effect.  the good part was the lidocaine he
injects with the cortisone which gave me a few lovely painless hours.  when
my hand surgeon went in last month to clean the inflammation out of my right
thumb, he found more joint erosion than they'd seen on x-rays and a small
bone spur no one knew was there.  that's me, over-achieving again.  ;-(

Do you think it was the spur that caused you the pain?

i wish, but i think the inflammation is/was the more likely cause along with
the joint eroding.  what he found inside that they couldn't see on xray has
me a bit nervous about what he'll find when he works on my more troublesome
left thumb!

I called the Doctor to see if I could come in and get a cortisone shot...But
I had one in December...They called me in a prescription for a Medrosol pack
and said if I wasn't better this week to call back and they would work me
in...Well I got it filled, but decided to wait and see if I got better
without it...I hate those prednisone pills...The thumb is better some, but
all my joints have gotten in on the game now...:( So I will start the pack
this morning...

Nanny, Like Sheila said...Psuedogout is like gout except for the
cause...Usually effects the bigger joints though...Like your knees and wrist
and and ankles...
Also it isn't as common....Diet has nothing at all to do with it
also...Colchicine does help...But it makes me sick so I don't take it...
They don't know what causes it either...Gee..Lucky us...Huh Sheila...
