Anyone have or had many side effects from Sulfasalazine? Has anyone had
a hot feeling in the face, ears and reddish.Or anxiety from it? I just
started it 2 weeks ago,1- 500mg.for 3 days,then 1 in a.m. and 1 in
p.m.for 3 days,then 2 in a,m, and 1 in p.m.for 3 days,and finally 2 in
a.m. and 2 n p.m.after the 2nd day at full dose,I started getting this
hot feeling in the face and ears, anxiety and BP would go up,took Xanax
and would feel better.Called RD and they said the hot red feeling can
happen and to go off of it for 2 weeks and see how I feel. They said alot
of times the second time starting it is better tolerated. Thanks! Carol

My then nitwit of a doctor put me on Sulfasalazine eventhough I have sulfa
allergies.  He told me that sometimes just because you are allergic to the
antibiotic it doesn't mean you will be allergic to this.

Now with that said, I got the hot feelings as you described.  I also got a
tomato red rash from it, although in previous sulfa reactions I have never
got that hot feeling.  Have heard from many with that same reaction although
some had it eventually resolve and some stopped the medication.

i didn't have those side effects, but it did cause ringing in my ears.  i
managed to split the doses up enough to tolerate the ringing, but i was glad
when i went off it!  my rd thought the side effects would diminish over time,
but they didn't in my case.  YMMV, of course.

I am currently on 2000mgs per day, and I'm not having any problems.
At first it upset my stomach, but after that it calmed down and I
haven't had any other problems since then.
At one point I was up to 3000mgs per day, but that was reduced as
prednisone and Enbrel were added. I'm almost off the pred now as
well-down to 5mgs per day.
If you can hang in there with the sulfasalazine it may be worth it. I
don't know why you are taking it but it is a DMARD with pretty tame
side effects, as compared to other DMARDS like methotrexate.
Good luck to you,
Char
