Has anyone had fusion done on the bones in their feet, due to arthritis?
My RD has referred me to an ortho to see if this would help the pain in my
feet.  I have an appt tomorrow and I am anxious to see what he recommends.
It  will make my feet stiff but they are already   stiff and what little
they move it is so painful it is almost unbearable.  at least the pain will
be gone. I have put up with the pain as long as I can stand.  I am at the
point  I cant even walk enough to do my grocery shopping and housework. My
pain is intense all over my body but my feet pain is unbearable.
I would appreciate any information if anyone has had this surgery.
Thanks
Janice

Janice,

I had the toes in my left foot fused many years ago and it definitely
rid them of pain. I also had bilateral ankle fusion's which stabilized
my ankles and made the pain disappear.  My feet have very little padding
on them so it feels as though I am walking on my bones.  The thing that
helped he most with this problem was custom made orthodic inserts for my
shoes.  Just had new ones made about $370.00 for the pair.  Not cheap,
but worth every penny.

Good luck with your surgery.  You deserve happy feet to make the rest of
your bod happy as well.

janice,
it's hard to advise anyone on this, but i think i would go for it if i
were in your position. the reason i say that is that i didn't, and now
many of the joints in my left foot have fused on their own in the
"wrong position," according to my doc. i still have extreme pain from
the ones that haven't fused yet.

it's a hard decision to make. best to you,

diane

his part of the world and I do not know if he will will see your post.   I

Hi Janice.
Foot pain is really hard to deal with.  I understand how you feel.  I
use to say I was like a Romanian dancing bear on a hot plate.  Thanks
to reflexology I can get through the day.  If you have someone at home
willing to massage your feet, not gently but rather firmly it may give
you a little respite. There are DVD.s  and books on how to do
reflexology on the feet.  It is simple, only a little time consuming.
Just image how nice it feels to lie there and have someone massage your
feet!!!

Me too.
There is no way I can handle a foot massage.

I cried the first time too, but things improved.  You do only what you
can bear. I still yell at my husband when it hurts too much and he
eases off.  I've started Yoga - day three now.  When it hurts more than
I can bear, I stop. Tomorrow will be a little better.  My doctor always
says "if you don't use it, you'll lose it".   He wanted me to get back
on my bike - it was so funny, I could not even lift my leg up to get on
so I had to lie the bike down, step over,  and then lift the bike up -
getting out of the bike was another process. A few months ago I went to
Egypt, and had to have a camel ride, How embarassing was that, trying
to swing my leg up and over.  It was a ride I will never forget.  The
camel (male) took off across the sand dunes after his lady friend, with
the guide, with his gown flying around him, after it. I held on tight
praying I would not come to a sandy end. I swear I will never get on
another camel. I still have a good laugh when I think about it. This
was a back packers tour - not too many frills. Then there was the time
when we were sailing down the NIle on a feluca. We had no bathrooms. It
was wash in the Nile and find somewhere on the bank - with two not too
good knees that was not too simple.  If you saw me you would not
believe I am riddled with arthritis until you saw the blood results and
the lumps and bumps - the CPR and ESR are  extremely high.
Keep smiling
Gail
