I managed to snap my last digit in my ring finger.  At first it was a
loud crack and the ring finger digit hung down. No pain just hung
there. I could squeeze my hand and no pain, I could not however I could
extend the ring finger but the last digit on there still hung down.  I
splinted it for about 2 1/2 weeks to see if that helps but nope.

Now the joint that the snap came from is starting to get red. NO pain
but itches on and off. I do not know if it is due to hitting that joint
when I do things, or if it is due to snapping the tendon.  There is
really nothing you can do for a snapped or cut tendon but splint,
right??

Oh there is a radical surgery but with my immune system, I have lupus,
well that is not an option right now. I have a very low white count and
very high sed rate.  SO my medrol is up more than usual at this time.

I am asking if any one has ever heard of snapping their tendons and
losing the ability to extend that finger joint??  well??
sorry for the leength but hard to explain.

oh I am out of the home state so doc here is Out of the question right
now. I do not trust this er since had hubby there already one time.
Won't head home till march..
ideas??
thanks bunches

The tendons of my left hand on the middle, ring and baby finger are
ruptured and as a result my fingers are bent to a 90 degree angle from
the PIP joints. I can still use my hand, but the fingers stay bent.
Is that where the joints hang down from, or is it from the carpal
area?
You can have surgery to reattach the tendons but the window of
opportunity is very small. I think it is about two days.
If the tendon ruptures in the wrist area, the fingers can hang as
well, and if they do, surgery must be done pretty immediately or
function is lost.

bummer, janers!!!  (((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))

yes, ma'am.  i have and did.  my thumb tendon snapped (severed --'twas cut a
bit by a bone fragment at the time of my fall and then, tore completely
apart) about a month after my wrist bone fragments decided to go on
walkabout all over the inside of my skin at the same time (thanks to a bit
of concrete nudging).  that same tendon was also ruputured, at a higher
location, because of my fall.

no, ma'am.  splinting is not the only thing that can be done.  an
orthopaedic hand specialist (surgeon) can do tendon grafts and/or re-unite
the tendon ends and they can do tendon rupture repair and etc..  yes, these
are surgical procedures, but not radical.  i do stress having a hand
specialist do the surgery and care, though.

the good thing, with some of this kind of tendon stuff, is that some of
these surgical procedures  can be put-off/postponed for a long time (up to a
year), until your body situation can better handle it.  but, and i stress
this---let a hand specialist tell you this is one of those situations..

my feeling is that you need to get yourself into a hand specialist asap.
you need to have it professionally analyzed/diagnosed, to get yourself
informed about what has actually happened to this tendon and whether or not
it is wise to wait up to a year, while your immune conditions become better
controlled.  if your tendon is not completely severed or ruptured, or if
your tendon situation is caused by other things like strain, sprain,
inflammation, etc. a splint might just help heal it, in addition to some
other treatment options that might be warrented and reccommended by a hand
doctor.  but it is much better to have a hand specialist dealing with this,
than to blindly trust that a splint is your only, or even the only correct,
option for you.

i'm glad it's not causing you pain, sweetie.  as to the redness, ice it, but
keep a very close eye on the area of the reddness' size.  use an ink pen to
define the area.  if the red area gets any bigger, or already noticably has
gotten beigger, get your butt in gear and to a doctor quick.  i don't care
what region of the country you are in, at that point.  that high sed rate
could be more than a "minor" concern at that point.

i'm sorry you have to go through this, janers.

thanks a lot with the reply's and yes it is just like how you both
describe it. I am watching the red area on the DIP and it goes away by
am but back at night so I am thinking it is indeed trauma with use.  I
thoroughly intend to see a specialits when getting home but again would
not trust these docs here at all.  Waste of a finger and I am not
saying the "middle one" hehe. sorry.

So I will indeed watch and get it checked but I have NEVER heard of
such a thing let alone seen one, so this is a new one on me. Always
something in my life the last 6 yrs for me.  But life moves on.

Thanks again and I will keep you all informed of this silly thing and
pray it don't get worse.
