Finding a Lawyer

I've been setting up appointments for my father - my older sister is coming
to stay for a week, to give me a chance to take a vacation and actually go
someplace, and because we're counting on her experience as a wife and mother
to make her better at nagging Dad into doing these necessary things.
<ducking>

My father's longtime attorney is no longer listed in the phone book -I know
he's working as the city attorney in a nearby town, but thought he was still
in general practice as well.  The lawyer's wife is a casual acquaintance, so
I've been calling their home to ask if he's available or can recommend
someone else - apparently they're on vacation, I get a voice-mail message
with a full in-box.

Lots of lawyers in the local Yellow Pages - but none that list elder law
among their specialties.  I phoned the Texas State Bar lawyer referral
service and was given just one number for the area - but it's in the next
county, almost seventy miles away! I've asked at the local AD caregivers'
support group meetings, and got no enthusiastic recommendations of local
lawyers there.  The Texas Dept. of Health has an AD/eldercare website that
refers me to a phone number that in turn refers me back to that state bar
number.

I have a neighbor who was an attorney in Houston specializing in estate
matters - he'd be a great source for a referral to someone local... but he
has AD! In fact, most of my friends and neighbors live in Houston (most
houses in my neighborhood are weekend homes), and I really don't want us to
go that far.

It's looking like it may come down to picking somebody at random from the
phone book, and that's liable to be unsatisfactory.

Suggestions?

Thank you very much, John!  I have searched scores of websites, but never
Googled my way onto that one.  There was one attorney in our area - looking
at his website, it looks like he only set up practice here last year, which
may explain why he's not in the November '03 phone directory.  He's even got
some articles published online that sound like he may be able to explain
things to Dad in a way he'll understand, and a reasonable idea of the fees
involved.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

I hope things go well for you and your Dad.

Hi Robert, I would give you the name of the attorney I work with here in Idaho,
but that would be a bit far for you to travel.  When I was setting up a website
for attorneys I remember a website they refer to that lists attorney profile
info.

I tested it out for Texas, just fill out the top portion specifying elder law
and leave the info. blank for lawyer or law firm specific then you should get a
list of either lawyer or law firms.

Take care,
Julie

Thanks, Julie.  I found a lawyer I think would be a good choice to work with
my father (he and my father even have very similar unusual names, and can
share jokes about it!).  Unfortunately, he's on vacation the week my sister
will be here.  The lawyer eve offered to meet with us on the Sunday night
after she arrives and before he leaves Monday morning - I thought that was
remarkable - but we don't think that's enough time to get Dad primed for the
visit.  So now Sis is just going to focus on nagging until he agrees to go,
and then I'll make an appointment in the following week.

Hope things go smoothly.

We have been busy trying to help my mom after two emergency room visits in 2 months.  She is
going to physical therapy for her walking and balance.

She had Congestive Heart Failure and then a blood clot in her arm.  Thanks to my
daughter-in-law, she saved her arm - I have very little confidence in the emergency room
doctor.  Who knows how long he would have taken to finally figure out what was wrong.  He was
acting like she must have had a mild stroke, but now her arm was doing better.  My
daughter-in-law saw that the doctor was about to leave after acting like things were getting
better.  She asked him to look at the color of her skin - it was grey - and her right arm was
very cold.  Before we knew it she had an ultrasound and a vascular surgeon was called in for
emergency surgery to remove the clot.

Life goes on.
