Here's a couple of articles.

The issue really seems to be a poor diet as much as anything - a lot
of older people are deficient in both B12 and folate. Low B12 is the
cause of a host of problems.

For my money, a daily supplement (i.e. a multivitamin with vitamins
and minerals) is probably cheap insurance, since we all know our loved
ones with AD can be capricious eaters, and its often hard to get food
into them period, let alone get them to eat things that are
nutritious.

Hi Barb,
Last I knew b-12 was given because of a different cause for the
dementia. I haven't kept up with the research so things might
have changed. Hopefully Darryl knows more about this. IMO Mary's
explanation is what I understood it to be.

Hi Mare and everyone,

There is a B12 deficiency related dementia but in the case of AD, low
levels of B6, folate and B12 result in *high* levels of homocysteine
which is bad for the brain and the heart.  Follow Mary's links for
more info.

With the exception of folate and B12, the B-vitamins are usually taken
together so a multi-vitamin will do the trick (it's important to note
that B2 or riboflavin harmlessly colours the urine bright yellow).  It
will also provide C and E which were recently shown to be associated
with a decreased incidence of AD.  Although the levels in the study of
500 mg C and 400 IU E are much higher than those found in a multi.

Bottomline:  a good multi-vitamin is good insurance.  Steer clear of
supplements that contain iron unless you're LO is anemic.

Darryl.
p.s., that's great news about the PET scans.  I wonder how that's
working out up here in Canada!?

Hi Darryl,
Thanks for the explanation. My Mom insisted I start taking a
multi vitamin when I was in my 20's and I continue to this day.
When Mom was first diagnosed her Dr put her on one as well.
I do hope Canada will approve the PET scan soon. I've been
waiting about 5 or 6 years since I first heard about it in this
newsgroup. I really hope it becomes standard procedure and the
pictures are very cool!
