John & the doctor

Dear Friends,

John's appointment was Tuesday---he was very cooperative about
going----I gave the nurse all of my print outs about memantine
(nameda) & asked that the doctor scan them before seeing John---I had
also brought this up in phone calls atleast 3 times.  We got in the
examining room , she talked with John about how he has been---he tried
to defer to me but eventually started talking for himself---with the
delayed speech pattern that I have become used to.  He debated on the
month---finally deciding it's April---knew the last holiday was
Easter---I decorate for all holidays & my cute bunnies bugged
him!----did well counting from 100 by 5's but had difficulty switching
to 7's.  I talked about a few memory problems that stood out to
me---turning on the wrong burner on the stove, etc.  She said she
wanted to put him on the new medicine ----I didn't have to bring it up
at all.  The pharmacy should have it for me to pick up next
Wednesday----

I told John we should be able to help out the rest of you as a test
couple---John is still aware of  his problems & changes----if there's
increased agitation, my guess is it's a normal side effect----John
already gets agitated about what is happening to him.

We also had good friends from Puerto Rico here for a few days---It is
nice to get back to our normal routine.  These friends have been there
before the onset of John's illness & all the time we were in PR.  It
was so nice to see them---John is recuperating now from the changes
but  their visit was worth it.

Finally, things are really looking good on other fronts---I finally
closed on some property in CO that I have been trying to sell since
December----Also, the boat is sold!!!!  All in one day---April
15---tax day---can you believe it?  Not only that, we only had to pay
$54.00 this year!!!!!!!   I was expecting more like $12,000!  Needless
to say, I am really happy & celebrating tonight!

Always,

Char

Char, congratulations on everything. So glad John was agreeable, and that
you sold the property and the boat.  What a load off your mind.  Hope the
Namenda will work for John.
Gwen

Hi Char,

I'm glad to hear the good news and the fact that you didn't have to
*convince* the doctor to prescribe the memantine.

Take care,
Darryl

Dear Char,

So good to hear that some things went your way!   Please keep us posted on
how things go with the Namenda.   Our doctor still hasn't allowed us to try
it.   We are still having problems.  We got Ida on antibiotics for the past
week and then provided another urine sample (using the same ruse with the
plastic bag over the bowl) and now we have to wait till Monday for the Lab
to tell us if it is OK or not.   THEN the doctor is supposed to sign the
lousy doggone papers and we can submit the application for the nursing home.

I just cannot believe this doctors office has been so miserable with us.

Dear Evelyn,

Your doctor does sound like a  pain---first of all if Ida does still
have a IUT, she is in pain while waiting until Monday for test
results.  Been there, done that, & it's not  at all comfortable!  I
could understand it if it were assisted living, but I have a hard time
figuring out why the nh is so particular.  Once she is there, the
doctors & nurses there will be handling everythiing.  The delay must
be exasperating for you & Peter.  Hope everything works out quickly
for you like it seems to be working out for us.

Has the doctor given a reason for not starting namenda?  John's doctor
& I both had big smiles when he asked her about viagra!  Needless to
say, she didn't prescribe it!  She is so good & knows exactly how to
handle John----grin & walk into her private office for awhile---lol!!!

Always,

Char

Evelyn, I'd like to echo the opinions of others - it makes no sense
for them to be making a big deal about a UTI. Its a pretty minor item
in the constellation of health concerns an elderly person with
advancing dementia experiencing - for the life of me, I can't
understand why it would be a deal breaker. Its not like its a
contagious infection.
