Dietary approach to attenuate oxidative stress, hypertension, and inflammation
in the cardiovascular system.

Imbalance between production and scavenging of superoxide anion results in
hypertension by the inactivation of nitric oxide, and the increased oxidative
stress from the resultant peroxynitrite that is produced promotes inflammatory
processes such as atherosclerosis. Induction of phase 2 proteins promotes
oxidant scavenging. We hypothesized that intake of dietary phase 2 protein
inducers would ameliorate both hypertension and atherosclerotic changes in the
spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rat. For 5 days/week for 14 weeks, we
fed rats 200 mg/day of dried broccoli sprouts that contained glucoraphanin,
which is metabolized into the phase 2 protein-inducer sulforaphane (Group A),
sprouts in which most of the glucoraphanin was destroyed (Group B), or no
sprouts (Group C). After 14 weeks of treatment, no significant differences were
seen between rats in Groups B and C. Rats in Group A had significantly
decreased oxidative stress in cardiovascular and kidney tissues, as shown by
increased glutathione (GSH) content and decreased oxidized GSH, decreased
protein nitrosylation, as well as increased GSH reductase and GSH peroxidase
activities. Decreased oxidative stress correlated with better
endothelial-dependent relaxation of the aorta and significantly lower (20 mm
Hg) blood pressure. Tissues from Groups B and C had considerable numbers of
infiltrating activated macrophages, indicative of inflammation, whereas animals
in Group A had few detectable infiltrating macrophages. There is interest in
dietary phase 2 protein inducers as means of reducing cancer incidence. We
conclude that a diet containing phase 2 protein inducers also reduces the risk
of developing cardiovascular problems of hypertension and atherosclerosis.

My mom's sister is in the hospital with a UTI.They have given her a week
to live. They say it has gotten into her blood and her white blood count
is very high. They have been treating it aggressively with
antibiotics.Has anyone ever heard of this?Barb

Hi Barb,
I think this is called sepsis and it is from long term/untreated
UTI's. For some people it's hard for them to tell that they have
a UTI or communicate that they have pain. Usually the smell of
the urine gives the caregiver a clue to get their LO tested. When
untreated the infection can get into the blood. This is just what
I've read when I've been worried about Mom. Make sure she is on
pain meds to ease her passing. Sorry to hear about her.

Hi Barb,
Glad to hear she is on pain meds. I remembered more and hope to
ease your mind a bit . Sometimes people have low grade UTI's or
UTI's
that don't respond to antibiotics, especially in late stage AD. I
was debating if we should continue a 3rd round of antibiotics for
my Mom vs pain meds and letting nature take it's course. She did
end up responding to the 2nd round so I didn't have to make that
decision. Mom really only seemed sleepy and uncomfortable but I
would have insisted on major pain meds for her. When I read about
it that seemed to be a big thing that everyone recommended. You
are in my thoughts.

I'm going to get blasted for this but put her on collodial silver
(high doses) as soon as possible. Silver kills over 650 pathogens and
is NOT TOXIC to humans. Dont know if it will work but I am making and
giving it to all my friends and relatives to great effect. I truly
hope it works.

There is a long thread on sci.med which speaks to the attempts at stopping
sepsis in a child ..
The thread speaks to the TARGETING of .. iron .. and the resultant .. CLEARING
of infection .. when .. ALL ELSE .. fails ..

Dear Barb,
Sorry to hear about yoour aunt. My sister's brother-in-law passed
away from a sepsis infection a week ago. He had had surgery,
recuperated well, & had gone from Tx to Indiana to see his daughter.
By the time he got there, he was so sick they put him in intensive
care where he stayed for about 2 weeks.
The doctors in Indiana said his was related to the surgery.
My thoughts are with you.
Always,
Char

I dont know how many people who get sepsis(staph) from the hospitals.
It's very upsetting to say the least. Bandages should be made out of
silver to help stop this stuff from happening. Friend is recovering
well on collodial silver after a foot surgery with a Dr. who didn't
know proper hygiene if it bit him....
