I go to my folks once a week right from work. I live 1 1/2 hours away,
but I work 1/2 hour from them, so I get there about 2pm and stay over
night and go back to work from there.
Anyway, when mom was in the hospital due to her stroke, a nurse
suggested putting a sneaker on her bad foot so she wouldn't get "dropped
foot".
We had to get her sneakers as she never owned a pair of them. We were
told to get high ones so they would help the ankle too.
After having the sneakers on her a few days we noticed a sore on her
foot. It eventually got infected but the nurses were on the ball and
took care of it.
When she went home dad kept putting the sauve on it and took care of it
like the nurses.
Now we are at least 6 months since this was totally cleared and she has
it again. She has not had any sneakers on so there has been nothing
rubbing to cause this.
He is back putting the ontment on it and its red around the sore.
Being she is in a wheel chair she never leaves the house so she can't
even get to the doctors. He has been to their house 3 times since she
has been home to check on her, but not since this sore has appeared.
Anyone have any ideas about this or has anyone experienced this too?
Thanks

Nancy, where is it, exactly? The heel is a likely spot for pressure
sores. You say she's in a wheelchair, but if she's not moving that
foot at all...

Nancy is it possible that she never really got it totally cleared up from
the last time? Could she be rubbing it somewhere? The first thing that
came to my mind is that I wonder how her blood glucose is running. Little
strange sores on the foot can mean some serious problems if she has any
tendency toward diabetes.

Mother gets sores on her ankle due to sleeping on them. This bony
prominence is a common one for what they call bedsores. Does she sleep a
lot? Is the side that the sore is one always pressing against the bed?
There are lambs wool anklets that you can buy to protect the ankles if they
are prone to bed sores.

No, she doesn't sleep a lot, and this is the leg that is paralyzed, along
with her entire left side. She sits in a wheel chair all day. At night dad
has been very faithful for over a year in checking the foot, and like I said
before, the sore disappeared for a few months. It is on the inside of her
foot and it isn't resting on anything.
Dad has been putting her foot in a foamy egg crate spongy thing that the
hospital had started him on.
I go to their house tomorrow so I will check it out thoroughly.
Being that this is the paralyzed foot she doesn't feel it.
I'll write after tomorrow.
Thanks
