Hey!
Such enlightening info I've received here. I can no longer claim
denial. Y'all have all specifically mentioned behaviors I thought were
unique to my dad.
He recently began Namenda but has been on Reminyl. Does anyone know
if there's a difference than Namenda with
Aricept? If so, can Reminyl be changed to Aricept?  I'd like to present
some ideas to the geriatrician before I ask. Since he's been on Namenda,
he's rubbing his thighs and wringing his hands. I don't see any
improvements, and it's been since Feb 1.
Thanks for any words of advice. I hope if I'm posted, I can find it-  I
welcome personal email on this info.
BTW- I have less spam on this new addy than my regular. This NG must be
pretty safe.

Holly we get spammers here too, but since we are a relatively small group we
all killfile them and they get nowhere with us.

Hi Holly,

You probably won't notice much difference between the combination of
Namenda and either of Reminyl or Aricept.  Both Reminyl and Aricept
are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and act by essentially the same
mechanism; however, there may be an added benefit of higher
acetylcholine levels with Reminyl.

Read more here (Axura/Namenda/Ebixa = memantine):

 Hi, Holly:
Darryl's right. There's not much difference between the Aricept and
Reminyl. All the testing, however, was done on Memantine with Aricept.
Nonetheless, the researchers felt that results would be the same no matter
what.
I've noticed that since my husband started taking Namenda, his mental
function deminished a bit. Not much, but it's noticeable. He was doing so
well on Memantine that I was getting from Europe. Maybe he was going to
decline anyway, but it seemed to be quite a coincidence. And, I did find out
that the Namenda is very slightly different from the Memantine from Europe.
We just got a new dose of Memantine today. He'll start on it tomorrow. If
there is a change, I'll let everybody know.

Hi Mary,

can you elaborate on what way its different? Is it just the strength?

Not really just the strength. The color is different, the shape is
different. From what the doctor told me, there are a couple of ingredients
that are in the US medication, but not in the amount that they are in the
stuff from Merz. Much less, in fact. I didn't ask what particular
ingredients were changed.
And, as I said, those ingredients may not be important. George's problems
may be just part of the progression of the disease. But, if he starts
improving after a week or two, I'll know to keep buying from Zurich!
