Evelyn Ruut - 14 Mar 2004 16:28 GMT Dear Friends,
You know how we have been having so much trouble with Ida in that she cannot seem to figure out where to place her butt when sitting on a chair or the toilet. She always misjudges and ends up with only one cheek on and one cheek off, and the resulting mess is a problem. Sometimes she even has fallen on the floor when trying to locate herself on a chair and misjudging the location of the seat.
We solved it in the dining room by making her use the arm chair rather than the chair without any arms, and so she HAS to sit where she is supposed to, because otherwise there is the arm of the chair in the way, and preventing her from sitting. This has been working out very well.
But that still left the toileting problem unresolved, which is where the biggest problems arose. Anyway, I seem to recall seeing a toilet seat with arms somewhere. I am going to make it my business to find one of those. That should make our lives at least a LITTLE easier.

Perhaps a local medical supply store can help. Otherwise, and now I'm thinking off the top of my head, you could have a local shop weld some iron together to 'frame' the toilet--again, creating a channel that Ida has to fit into. Paint it white and voila. What to do about the pointy edges though? Hmmm...
Darryl.

I think it is some sort of a gizmo that you can buy..... In fact we are going out now to look for it at a medical supply store!

Evelyn Ruut - 14 Mar 2004 23:52 GMT Went to the local medical supply store, and of course they were closed today (Sunday) but right in the window was the gadget we need.
Thanks so much for writing to me, Beth. It is exactly the same gadget, the raised toilet seat with the attached arms. The aluminum sidebars by themselves just looked too flimsy, they wouldn't have done it.

Jennie - 15 Mar 2004 02:10 GMT Evelyn,
My sister just got one of those for my mother. She also got a shower stool - something for my mother to sit on in the shower, and a sprayer that attaches to either the tub faucet or the shower head (I can't recall which at the moment). It makes giving a bath a lot easier. Do you already have one of those for Ida?

We got those first thing, and I have no idea how one could possibly wash someone without them. In fact, I like to sit on that shower chair myself and wash my hair with the shower on the hose. Very convenient.

Ok, ok...so the other URLs and suggestions are much more aesthetically pleasing and easier to introduce than my idea. ;-) Let us know how it works out.
/Darryl hanging his head in shame with an upturned bottom lip.

Mary K Farrell - 18 Mar 2004 00:05 GMT Hi, Evelyn: I know exactly what you're looking for. We had one for my mom. It's a toilet seat that hooks onto the regular bowl and has arms attached. We got it from Dr. Leonard's. You can find them online at www.drleonards.com. I don't remember the cost, but it wasn't much. Good luck....and Happy St. Patrick's Day! Evelyn Ruut - 15 Mar 2004 00:22 GMT Mary thanks so much. Some of these look like good options. Especially the one where you can use the regular seat on top of the riser with the handles.

When my mother fell last March I bought her one of those. It was part of a bedside commode. It could be used as such or replace the pail with a funnel sort of thing (included) and it would sit straddle the commode. It had arms and raised the seat level to make it easier for the person to get up and down. I bought it at a drug store that handled walkers and such.

Frank Zink - 17 Mar 2004 01:39 GMT Home Depot sells that seat in the kitchen and bath department. They also have other handicap items to purchase. I work in that department in Dover, N J so I know for a fact we sell it and most stores sell the same merchandise. Nancy
