Last week my husband Don started on Namenda. I did not expect him to
act lethargic. I am to increase the dosage but think I will finish the
week on the 5 mg.
I wish I could explain what I see--could this new med be a surprise to
the brain...
I believe it was meant for advanced AD.
as well as early stages. Perhaps I am looking too hard..or
expecting too much...

Give it a little time. He's supposed to stay on the 5mg in the morning for
one full week. Then go to 5mg in the morning and 5mg in the evening for the
second week. Do NOT increase the medication before he's been on the dose for
one full week.
I haven't heard of Namenda making anybody lethargic. But there's always
something new to come up. On another group, I keep hearing that Namenda made
the LO violent. That's also not a side effect I've ever heard of, but these
people insist that it has to be the Namenda. To my knowledge, the medication
was not changed in any way in order to make it acceptable by the FDA. It
should be the exact same stuff we've been getting from Europe for the past 8
months.
Just a thought, but could it be possible that your husband is lethargic
because of, say, a cold or another medication? Just trying to rule out any
other reason there might be.

Thanks for replying. What I meant., was that I was extending the first
week beyond the 7 days. Don is on so many meds and many of them cause
dizziness. However, they are all necessary.
In addition, somehow I feel he is/was passing onto another stage. I
know Namenda is just another 'hope' and I do not hope for much...just
time for me to be able to continue caregiving .
When I read the posts and realize I've passed thru some of the
stages...angry a great deal of the time...I know it's only because I
laughed at myself a great deal of the time. And some Drs...who just
---whoa---that's a whole 'nother story.

Florence, I know exactly what you mean! I don't blame you for extending the
first week. That's probably wise. Just don't accelerate it!
I'll be interested in knowing if he gets past the lethargy. Please keep us
all informed!

My father has also become lethargic, Florence. While it was nice that he
didn't object to my mother leaving him to go to an appointment, by the
same token, he didn't seem pleased when we returned. I've ruled out
everything else except a new progression of the disease. He's just going
through the motions, whereas before, he would get excited by some
things. He's 89 and somewhere in the late/moderate stage
