My mom is in the hospital with pneumonia and congestive heart
failure.Doing very well and coming home Monday. What i am curious about
is she has been as sharp as a tack the last two days.Remembering things
like nothing was ever wrong.I am wondering if its the zyprexa or some
other treatment they are giving her.She has albuterol treatments and
antibiotics and her regular meds. But she is amazing us.I know it
probably won't last but i can not  hardly believe it.Does zyprexa help
in that area too?And how soon does that med. take affect.Barb

has she been on oxygen all this time?  that could explain a
sudden increase in alertness and cognition, as well as energy.

if she has congestive heart failure and had a lot of fluid in her
lungs, she probably wasn't getting enough oxygen before she went
in the hospital.  as her heart continues to deteriorate, she will
become more and more hypoxic until she gets on oxygen regularly.

if she was on oxygen, how did she react to the cannula (nasal
tube)?  does she sit still enough to be able to use an oxygen
concentrator at home without constant supervision?  if not, you
need to think NOW about what the next step will be if her
physical health continues to deteriorate.

Yes,she is on oxygen in the hospital. And she was on a neb at home but
just since her pneumonia. She had the mouth piece and was not much of a
problem keeping it in her mouth.Yes i could of left the room and she
would of kept it in.She had very little congestive heart failure. She
gets pneumonia every year. She's just been able to answer questions she
couldn't since we have been here.Like knowing my hubby was her son in
law.She usually thinks he's one of my kids. She knew my son was her
grandson.Never would she even know his name. She goes on about she's not
gonna live alone since my dad died.Which she never has.The doctor asked
her if she lives alone. She said no,I live with my daughter and son in
law and grandson.Never would she know who they are. She's very aware that
she's in the hospital  and wants to go home.I am just greatful for it as
long as it may last.Barb

Hi Barb,

Last summer when Ida fell and got banged up in the middle of the night, for
the next few days we were very solicitous of her, putting antibiotic
ointment on her cut and watching the progress of healing where she got a
black eye.   Strange to say she also seemed to be remarkably "together" for
a few days afterward, but it didn't last.    I think it may be related a
little to how they are able to pull it together and sound perfectly normal
in the doctors office, or at daycare or in a strange social situation, but
the deficits return when they are relaxed and at home.   I am glad you are
aware that these moments of clarity can occur, but don't think they are here
to stay.

So what exactly has changed?  The oxygen and albuterol?

Darryl.

It's probably the antibiotics that are helping her.

I'm begging my dad to go thru the Lyme treatment. He has memory
problems etc. My mom has felt better than ever. It was tough but she
and I made the treament. If the antibiotics stopped working I would
hit her with another. The days where one antibiotic (especially short
term) can work are long gone. Hit, hit, hit again. Saved me and my
moms life.

Barb,

Bertie had a few times of remarkable clearity.  Once I even took her
home to her house and let her spend the day.  But it was always
followed by a worsening of her condition.

Update on my mom!!!!
My mom went in the hospital a week ago.Pneumonia and congestive
heart failure.Of course she was on antibiotics, oxegyn, neb treatments. At
one point we could hardly wake her up all day, near a coma. She was very
sick. She is now home.Remarkably none the worse for the wear. She is
getting much better. She is still on oxegyn at #2.Which may be taken off
after her next appt. She did not regress at all.She was pretty bad a few
different times in the hospital, including calling my hubby a bastard. But
all is pretty much back to normal since we are home.I thank God for her
getting well and not putting her back in her AD.And her zyprexa is so
working. Her questions have decreased by 75%.Barb
