Hello everyone.  So many reply posts.  I don't know where to start.  Started
a new thread as my last reply got bounced.

We found another AD home for him if need be.  Half the cost of the current
facility and our pastor recommended it.  Dad does have a long term insurance
policy that would kick in after 90 days.  We are aware of the 3 year
lookback asset move but I need more details.  Will hire an Elder lawyer when
the time is right.  His PCP prescribed him exelon the day before he was
admitted into the hospital.  He never got to take it.  I believe that
everytime he gets the Ativan shot he looses a little more of his will to
live.  One of the side effects of Adivan is amnesia.  Isn't that special?

I do think that trying another location such as home will yield some answers
regarding the meds.  24hr care is a must.  We can always move him to the
other facility.

Last nights visit I found him on the floor mat (bed was lowered) in just a
diaper.  Had urinated.  He will not use the diaper, tries to get up to use
the bathroom.  They are not watching him close enough.  We got him cleaned
up and back in bed.  He had a fever around 100.  Said he had to go again and
I had them get him on his feet to go.  He could barely stand.  I spoon fed
him the thickened applejuice and he had two and a half cups.  He's also
dehydrated.  Skin on his hand does not snap back.   I think he needs to be
hospitalized again.  He was supposed to go for a CAT scan of his liver/gall
bladder today because of elevated liver enzymes in his blood work.  Had a
contrast liquid to drink last night before bed and orders to fast him this
am.  Well, last night when I got there the nurse said she tried to give it
to him but he would not take it (I doubt she tried hard).  I put it in his
thickened applejuice and he sucked it right down.  Then, this am they
"mistakenly" gave him breakfast.  Mom called the hospital and the scan had
to be cancelled.  Mom asked his nurse about rescheduling and was given the
old "Well, isn't he supposed to be leaving?" runaround.  They are so
screwing us because he is a problem.  He's not like all the other patients
there.  Most can walk, eat and are compliant.  He is only on Zyprexa.  No
Aricept or Namenda even though I've asked he be put on it.  Dr Smug is
taking a very passive approach to his care.  Their just not doing the right
things.

Just spoke with Mom.  His fever broke and he's supposibly on his feet.

Do the insurance companies not realize that AD is a vicious disease?  What,
do they not cover AD/Lewy Bodies/Parkinson's ect...  How can they possibly
consider him able to go home?

Wrote this quickly, hope is all makes sense.

My direct email is knwestremove@yahoo.com if anyone wants to email me.

Thank you all for the input and advice.  I really appreciate it.

Ken

might consider the lawyer sooner, rather than later... perhaps involving one
(and making sure the facility and the insurance co. know about it) would
trigger some concern re: potential liability? As in, if they release him to
home and someone gets injured, do they want to be held responsible? (whether
stated or implied)

I have no experience with health care in the US though - but anything you
can do to ensure the safety of not only your dad, but also everyone involved
in his care wherever - but especially at home.... has got to be THE
priority.

I agree.

We got his stay extended until Monday.  We are all meeting then to discuss.

The therapy director tried to tell me he was min-assist.  Told her that
she's wrong.

Took Dad to a neurologist appt yesterday and he advised us to take him to
the ER.  We did just that.

He was dehydrated, anemic and has pneumonia.  They admitted him.  Told them
no sedation (per his new Dr).  After 9hrs in the ER he started coming
around.  Smiling, making jokes.  "Keep the ice chips coming" he said.  Very
clear signs of our good ole Dad.   He's getting a new full evaluation today.

Cant believe that f@#$%#$ nursing home wanted to discharge him as mimimal
assist.  He was dying.

Everyone says to drop Humana and go with just medicare.  Any input on
this???

Tx.

Ken, is Humana a supplement to Medicare, or the main one?  I have
Medicare but I also have a supplement to pay for what Medicare doesn't pay.

Yes, Humana is a supplement but...  Always a but...  We can only use Humana
Dr's.  What Humana does is they take his medicare payments and then provides
the cheapest care possible to make a profit.  It was Humana pushing him out
of the facility.  Basically, until we drop it, it's like not even having
medicare.

In any case, he's doing better.  They gave him blood for the anemia,
antibiotics, speech therapy, and no sedation.  (Using mild restraints).  His
head is clearing slowly.  His swallowing problem is the biggest issue right
now.  They wont let him eat or drink anything until they find out what's
going on.

Ken, I have my supplement through AARP and they have never questioned
anything.  If Medicare pays anything on it, they pay the rest because I
took on the C program.  I've never had a problem at all with them and it is
not too expensive either.

Ken, I have nothing to offer regarding the insurance situation, but I am SO
GLAD to hear that you have things under control and that you are on the way
to finding out what is really going on with your Dad.   Please keep us
posted and good luck.

Ken,
Glad he's feeling better.
It's been a few years since I set Mom up and with the new
rules I'm not sure it's still required. At the time you
really had to have a Medi-gap policy because Medicare really
doesn't protect you from everything. With Medi-gap we rarely
have to pay a co-pay. There are varying levels in plans
offered. A search on the Medicare site might turn up more
current info.

remember medicare doesn't pay for medication (except for insulin
for diabetics).  i wouldn't drop any insurance that's at all
useful, since he now has pre-existing conditions that will make
in impossible for him to qualify for any other insurance.
Gwen Love - 28 Jan 2004 21:40 GMT
Dennis, I could be wrong, but from when I started with AARP, I think if
you are transferring from another supplement, pre-existing conditions are
covered.  However, I would not drop one until the other was approved and in
place.
