After taking care of Bertie, I often wonder if my "antenna" is just
hypersensiive to any signs of alzheimers disease.  I know that Aunt
Flo seeing monkeys on the wall is a definite red flag.  We are getting
ready to do a family intervention and see how far we can get with that
before going on to the next step.

We are now having some real concerns about my 86 year old mother.  She
seems to have little if any awareness of any kind of social propriety.
What makes this so hard to accept is that it is so unlike her.  This
woman still gets up every morning and puts on full make up. Until
recently she would never dream of using the wrong fork, or eating with
her elbows on the table, or failing to send a thank you card, etc.
Using improper English was something she absolutely looked down on.(
She has always been somewhat of a snob)  But my sister says that now
she sits around picking her nose, she passes gas in public, and she
cheats at scrabble.  You can't imagine what a change this is for her.
If I remember correctly, a fading social awareness was one of the
early signs with Bertie.  Is that typical?

Dear Kay,

It could be a number of things..... sounds to me like she is due for a
serious checkup, if not a full gerontological workup.

Kay,

I agree with Evelyn.  There could be a lot of different things going on
here.  Alzheimers could be one of them, but I could also see the possibility
of mild depression (after my Dad died, I noticed my Mom quit doing her
hair - apparently felt like she didn't need to present herself at her most
attractive anymore) or a stroke (I have heard that people can undergo
personality changes as a result of strokes, and very mild strokes can occur
unnoticed.  I have heard of people who were very prim and proper all their
lives suddenly began to swear or engage in bawdy, risque conversation after
a stroke).

I'm sure there are many other possibilities that I'm completely unaware of.
Maybe you could somehow communicate with the doctor prior to the checkup,
and tell him/her exactly what changes you are seeing in your Mom that are
raising your antennae.
