taking a break from the group

As a long time group member (august.western@various ISPs) I thought
I’d give notice that I’ll be taking a break from the group due to a
significant relapse in my on-going battle with cancer.  Having cancer
over the past 10+ years has slowed me down to where I have had plenty
of time to pay close attention to my 80-90 year old Mother-in-law's
long battle with vascular dementia.
This aspect of my having cancer, until recently, has been for good for
both of us, in that she got my undivided attention and I could always
see that there were worse things than having cancer. My MIL is still
not clearly aware of what’s going on, other than the fact that I go to
the doctor almost every day. Since all days are a blur to her, these
doctor appointments are not unusual.

My treatments will no longer allow me to contribute regularly, but
I’ll try to keep up on my group reading. My answers may be few or none
or much shorter.  I’m not planning on going anywhere soon, but if
things go bad, my wife will let the group know.

All the best to all –

August, I am sorry to hear that you are dealing with so much adversity right
now.   Do drop in from time to time.   Our best wishes go with you, and I
hope you are able to conquer it.

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words.  My MIL just thinks I go to
the Dr every day. Other than that nothing has registered with her that
anything is wrong or different. I guess that is good enough for the
time being.

I have had a relapse of merkel cell carcinoma, a very rare
neuroendocrine
skin cancer known for spreading very quickly and putting out mets
everywhere. In only 5 weeks this latest tumor spread from my
mediastinal lymph nodes into my lungs, L kidney, new chest tumor and
also a 1cm mass in my R frontal lobe.

I have spent the last 2 weeks having 3 weeks of whole brain radiation
crammed into  2 weeks & then followed up by starting chemo cycles on
this past monday. Things have been a whirlwind to say the least. Life
gets very real and precious when you are making your own creamation
arrangements and signing up for hospice.  The good news is that the
small dose of dexamethazone has me breathing real well and eating
like
a horse.

August, we will just pray hard that you won't be using those arrangements
you made soon.  Also pray for you to feel good.

You will be on our minds and we hope things go smoothly and well for you and
yours. It's a rough road to travel and we wish you the best.

As a cancer survivor myself, I know that every day is a blessing.
Good luck with your battle, and LIVE STRONG.  For info that Lance
Armstrong's foundation provides for those living with cancer,
visit his website at http://www.livestrong.org

I hope that you will at least let us know how you are doing from
time to time.
