Robin Nemeth - 25 Nov 2007 12:46 GMT Perhaps you might be interested in my experiences when I decided it might be a good idea to find out some things about the safety of the flu shot clinics that are being conducted at area retail stores.

Although the Department of Health and Human Services vowed, eight years ago, to remove the mercury based preservative thimerosal from vaccines, our government and vaccine manufacturers continue to poison Americans thru toxic flu shots.

Mary_Gordon@tvo.org - 25 Nov 2007 13:44 GMT I'm a Canadian, over 50, and both hubby and I had flu shots this year. He's a diabetic, we're both asthmatics, we've got three kids (16, and soon to be 14 and 10). We find the kids tend to bring home all kinds of winter flu like stuff - and we used to get flattened at least once a season. Since we've been having shots, we've noticed we don't tend to get big whammy flu - if we do get sick, its much milder.
I'm much more worried about getting laid out by flu or worse.. pneumonia (a common complication) than I am about trace levels of thimerisol. Routine flu kills a lot of older people every year.
Besides which, preservative free flu shots ARE available. See this link from the US CDC http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/thimerosal.htm

I get a flu shot every year and haven't had the flu once, since I started getting the shots about 4 years ago. Whatever the risk, it is worthwhile for me. There are many areas where we are exposed to mercury, and teeth fillings are one of the biggest instances. I no longer have any mercury laden fillings. Eating fish is another risk, yet fish has also been associated with better health in many areas. Some things it just doesn't pay to make yourself sick with worry about.

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 25 Nov 2007 21:08 GMT I haven't missed a flu shot in several years, and have never had the flu! My cardiologist said to be sure to get one this year. I already had. Gwen

The most ridiculous one is thinking they will get the flu from the shot. My husband used that argument, and it was debunked on TV, and he finally acquiesced. That said, his arm was very tender this year after getting the flu shot. I told him that if it made his arm that sore, then the actual flu itself might have been a very virulent strain that could have made him VERY sick if he didn't get that shot. If a flu shot makes you feel ill, you can bet that the real illness itself would have been a killer strain.

I haven't had a flu shot for four years and didn't get the flu. If mercury is nothing to be concerned about, why are the fish dying?
EddyJean
Mary_Gordon@tvo.org - 26 Nov 2007 12:36 GMT EddyJean, the fish in the ocean are not dying of mercury poisoning, and there is considerable evidence to suggest that the mercury in ocean fish is natural.

No one is saying that mercury is not a concern to human health. However, you CAN get mercury free flu shots.
I'd also suggest in the bigger picture of risk management, for the frail elderly, flu represents a real danger i.e. if you look at the stats on who dies from flu, its heavily weghted in the direction of people who are older and who have a constellation of health problems. They are like an egg balanced on end, and it doesn't take much to push them over the edge. Flu is a killer for them, and the faint risk from trace mercury in the flu shot is much less of a risk to them than flu.
Everything is a trade off.

Mary, --many species of fish are dying. Ask the fishermen. There are harmful ingredients mixed in with petroleum products dumped, or accidently spilled, into the ocean by freightors, cruise ships and other fishing vessels. Fish is a fish. Mercury is a liquid metal taken from the ground, therefore, its very unlikely mercury is natural to a fish.

I asked for mercury-free flu shots last year. No one knew where to get them, including the doctors.

Routine flu kills a lot of older people every year. Here in the US there is a pneumonia vaccine that you can get too. You only need to get it once but some are taking it every 5 years.
