This morning in upstate NY, we have had our first taste of the winter that is to come. It's 45 degrees right now, but it was in the thirties this morning. Right now the sun is shining and we still have rather a lot of color in the foliage, but it is beginning to fade as the leaves continue to fall. I am glad you posted. :-)

I don't know where everyone has gone off to either! I still post once in a while around here (as you can see) but I find a lot of friends and good reading online at soc.senior.issues. A nice group of people, mostly ladies.
That problem of not swallowing... I believe it is called "chipmunking" because they sort of stuff the food into their cheeks rather than swallowing it. It must be very frustrating.
Are there certain foods she ingests more easily? Like soup or applesauce or soft stuff? It must be hard to have to "tell" her to swallow. I hope someone else who has experience with the situation will reply to you too. My mother in law never experienced that particular problem, but she was easy in so many ways. I think of her fondly and with affection these days, though it certainly wasn't the case when she first came here.

I had my husband helping around here, and he took care of the nights and I took the days. We did have her in daycare for a while, but it became a bit problematical when all she wanted to do is sleep and they would let her, and then she'd be up at night. I have a wonderful next door neighbor who would come and care for her here, and sometimes take her to her house for a while too. That way I could get out once in a while. Finally we could take it no longer, and placed her in a local nursing home. They took very good care of her there, and we could come and see her anytime we wanted.

Pity parties are definitely allowed here! That is one of the better functions of this group!
It took me a long time to feel as though I had my own life back after we placed Ida. We were both completely burnt out during our time of caregiving. Nothing relieved it, even though we were lucky enough to not only have each other, but other care givers that gave us breaks.
It was without a doubt, one of the most difficult things I ever did. But it was the right thing to do and in retrospect, I am not sorry we did it.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do what needs to be done on your own, unfortunately. But you know you are doing the right thing, and I am sure that your mom realizes she is being cared for with love.

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 06 Nov 2007 17:13 GMT Come on Barb, be smart. You don't want to die before your Mom does! Every time you want a cigarette, just say NO to yourself. Good luck in stopping. Gwen

[quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > just need to realize i cannot smoke. Its not a choice. Its gonna kill > me.Other than that i am feeling good.Barb Adelle - 06 Nov 2007 17:37 GMT There was a recent thing on TV (the View, I think, because host Whoopi Goldberg wants to quit smoking) that said nicotine was just as addictive as heroin and many people need extra help to quit. So, Barb, if you need extra help, go for it.
The segment said that the people who used Wellbutrin seemed to have the highest success rate, but others have reported success tapering off nicotine through the use of gums, patches or both in combo. They also said choosing a specific date to quit somehow made it more likely you will be successful. Can't remember why. But you need to start the wellbutrin before the actual quit date.
So if you are considering quitting again, maybe checking out The View's website would be a place to start. Good luck! Adelle (who grew up with a mom who smoked and couldn't wait to move out to get away from it)

It's called alt.support.stop-smoking. You'll get all the support you need there....as well as links to valueable resources regarding quitting.
Sally Smoked for 36 yrs.... Quit for almost 3 yrs now.... Best decision I've ever made....

I was using chantix and it was awesome.I quit for many weeks but i like smoking.I am back on the chantix and my quit date is monday.
sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 07 Nov 2007 20:38 GMT Barb, good for you. I'm crossing my fingers for you. I know you feel anger at your siblings, but please try to get over it. It doesn't hurt them at all and it can really hurt you. Very bad for your health, and you already have enough going against you. You really don't need anything else. Gwen
