as soon as i got mom in assist living I went to the doc and found out I
had bronchitis, then to top matters off my blood pressure kept raising
and rising to where it was almost stroke level, I do not know what
brought it up to 220 over 108 I got scared and went back to the doc
,where they added another blocker of some sort. I guess it was all good
in some ways as I could not go and see mom for about 7 days now. I hope
to go soon to see her but I have been calling and they said she is
eating well and doing everything she is suppose to do. said she even
tried to pay someone to take her home. Oh well not much she can do now.
I haven't felt so guilty after gettig myself so run down for trying to
keep her home with me. I really have paid the price now and I have to
try and get myself well.I have faced the fact that mom cannot come home
and if and when I go to see her I know she will ask when she can come
home. But now I can leave and know she is safe and I can get a life
again. I just want to say to all caregivers be careful as you run on
pure adrenaline until you can stop and then it hits the damage of what
has been done will come back on you.

It's also wise to remember that were anything to happen to the
caregiver, any further assistance would have to come from elsewhere: a
family member who isn't as close, the State, someone. This is something
my own medics had to remind me of two or three times.
Blessed be,

Doc already had me on anti-depressants but I want to get off of them.
I think by being sick and staying away from mom all this week, the
guilty feelings passed. I was glad and relieved that I didn't have to
worry and deal with her any more on a one to one basis, I thought if I
got sick like this who would have taken care of her?
I know now I did the right thing and now if she should stress me out
when I visit I can walk away knowing she is safe and not all alone. I am
coming to terms with my feelings and guilt. I feel so much better and
wish I could have done this sooner, but I feel that God knew how full my
plate was and this was the right time.
thanks JJ

no, you need to keep taking them for a while. after a traumatic
experience like you've been through, you are going through an
emotional roller coaster, and the meds will help even things out.
to help get back on an even keel, i suggest finding a caregiver
support group. in addition, you might want to ask you doc if
she/he knows about any depression support groups that you could
attend.
and exercise every day, whether you're motivated or not. aerobic
exercise creates endorphins which improves mood and make you feel
more positive.

Hi JJ,
So sorry to hear you got so sick! While I was caring for my mother in
law I got seriously sick with very bad chest colds 5 times in one
year! Turned out my blood sugar was running high and that was what
caused it.
By the way, did you know that most cold medicines can raise your blood
pressure? That may be what did it, if you were taking anything for
the bronchitis.
I am glad to hear your mom is doing OK in the assisted living. Not
that you need me to say it, but you did the right thing. Can you
imagine how it would have been if you got sick and were still taking
care of her at home?
I'm glad you posted, I am sure I am not the only person who had been
thinking of you and wondering how things were going.
My mother in law also offered people money, her jewelry, whatever, if
they would "take her home" again. It is so sad, but that "home" is
not an addresss, but really a time when they were well and able to
take care of themselves.
Take care of yourself, JJ.... I hope you are feeling better.

And the answer is "The doctor needs to run some tests, check your meds,
after that"
