The directions from the pharmacy say, "Take this medication by mouth
once daily with or without food, usually just before bedtime, or as
directed by your doctor."  On the bottle, it says, "Take 1 tablet at
bedtime."  However, it adds, "If you experience insomnia, talk to your
doctor about switching to a morning dose."

In our case, she was having trouble sleeping, so I have her take it
around noon.

We gave it to my MIL in the evening just after eating dinner because it helped her to sleep better and was better tolerated on a full stomach.

thanks for the in-put but I guess for me I need to keep giving it to mom
in the morning as many times her appetite is not all that great a night.
she does eat a very good breakfast in the morning so I guess it is best
for me to keep it that way
thank you so much I am learning so much from the group.

JJ, you are welcome.   I think they suggest giving it in the evening because of several reasons.   The first is that there is a larger meal to buffer its more irritating effects.  The second is that it makes them a little sleepy.  But if you give it to her after breakfast, and it is working out well for you, why not?
