Just thought I would post what happened to my dad. He is pretty far gone,
scored 6 on the MME at the start of the trial, but very content and quiet.
Trial part 1 was 6 months double blind.
Trial part 2 started 3 weeks ago, he was on memantine.
After 2 weeks he became violent and has been taken off the memantine.
It could be a coincidence that this happened just 2 weeks after he started
memantine for sure (because he may already have been on it for 6 months),
but they cant take the chance at the home where he is, so he's off the trial
for sure.
I wondered beforehand that if the memantine worked, if it might 'improve'
him back to some months ago, to the point where he became more aware of his
problems, of the fact he was in unusual sorroundings etc, hence the violence
to escape. So maybe getting 'better' at this stage is no benefit at
all....OTOH may just be a complete coincidence as I said. Dont suppose we'll
know unless there is a lot of this reported when the trial finishes.
