I don't know how it is for the rest of you but sometimes I get caught up in
who my mother is now and I forget who she was. It's been so many years
since this awful disease was diagnosed in my mother. Thirteen years and
counting.
My grandparents started a yearly family reunion back in the early 50's and
I've always gone but it really wasn't something that I really wanted to do.
Now I'm one of the oldest of my generation and I've taken over in the
organizing the reunion and become keeper of family information. I knew if
I didn't, this family tradition would probably die. Since my hobby is
computer technology, it makes my job fairly easy. At our last reunion a few
weeks ago, I made a family DVD complete with old and new pictures with photo
transitions and music. I bought along a LCD TV and DVD player and played
this 18 minute show for the duration of the reunion. We've rented the same
community building for the past 50+ years. I knew my mother's cousin
(John) who 80 Years old had taken 8 MM movies and video tapes over the years
at the reunion. When he saw the DVD he offered me his movies. He had
transferred the 8 MM to video tape. I told him I would convert all his VCR
movies over to DVD and copy all the paperwork he had. Some of it was
records dating back to the civil war. I've been busy. When I was editing
a group of movies, I came across John's wedding in 1948. He and his wife
are still reasonably healthy BTW. Anyway I didn't realize that 8 MM was in
color back in '48 but it was. In the first few minutes of the movie, my
mother and father were leaving the church after the ceremony. My mother
was 28 years old.....so young and beautiful. I had almost forgotten this
woman but a lot of memories came back in that short clip of film and my
father too. He's been gone for nearly 3 decades. Later on there was 15
minutes of movies taken from 1957 thru 1960 of all of the family reunion.
So many gone.....so many in their 70's and 80's with various illnesses
including dementia -- my mother and John's sister. The old cars, the games
we played outside and generally having a good time. A young cousin who was
a beautiful 3 year old running and playing with a balloon only to die of
leukemia a few years later. I've made a new family DVD and included these
movies ....it's now 50 minutes long but a labor of love. I guess I liked
those family reunions after all......June

Hi,
What an interesting project, I wish I
had the patience to do the same. If
you ever post any of your videos online
I would love to view them. If you use a
site like one of the following you can
upload some very large files and then
send a link for download to your
recipients.
"YouSendIt"
http://www.yousendit.com/
"SendSpace"
http://www.sendspace.com/
"Dropload"
http://www.dropload.com/
I spend lots of time in some of the video
newsgroups. Many users have serious
problems trying to accomplish the same
thing you have done so successfully.
Could you please share with me the
methods you used to transfer the video
to your hard drive and what editing/
authoring software you are using.
Thank you.

Hi John.....I have a Sony "dubber" It plays and records video tapes and
DVDs. All you have to do is insert your video tape on one side and a blank
DVD disc on the other side and push a button. Now if your tapes are more
than 2 hours long or right at 2 hours you may have to stop 5 minutes short
of 2 hours and insert a new blank DVD. Don't forget to leave enough room to
"finalize the DVD" I put the DVD in my computer and I use Nero Recode to
splice the pieces together (if necessary)if it's 2 hours or less. I
suppose you could compress the files if it's more than 2 hours or use duel
layer discs. I also like DVDshrink (free program )to edit video and make
clips because it's so easy and of course you can get rid of the awful
music soundtrack on those old 8 MM converted to video by unclicking the
audio. The easiest program to put a show together is called Proshow Gold.
http://www.photodex.com/products/proshow/ about $70. It's great to about
20 minutes after than it craps out when compiling. So I made 4 short
separate movies with music with Proshow and then I used Ulead 9.0 to make a
new DVD with a menu with four chapters. One for the original proshow then
I added the 15 minute reunion movies Proshow, then I added Wedding Proshow
and I used Alan Jackson's "Remember When" for the audio
http://www.marycy.org/remember.html . I edited out the first verse ( I used
a mp3 editing program) and it fit perfectly to the video including the blank
slide I inserted at the beginning with information about the video. Then
another chapter with pictures from another family member photo album ( I
scanned it in and that took awhile!) also made into a Proshow. My Menu
background is a picture of Thomas Kinkade's "Victorian Autumn" and
Rachmaninoff for audio background. Even my software engineer daughter was
impressed. Of course she put me on to the Proshow and Ulead programs to
begin with. It took me a couple of days to get done what I wanted done
after I put together the video clips. There's always the learning curve
when doing something new. It helps to be retired even though I help out
with my mother and 5 year old grandson. Also I have two computers that I
can use. My laptop has duel processors and 2 gig of ram. That helps too.
I'll check out you suggestions for uploading video. Thx....June

Very useful info...thank you very much.
If you decide to share your videos please
let us know.
For making slide show type videos from
digital images/scans....you might enjoy
experimenting with PhotoStory 3...it's
a free download from Microsoft.
PhotoStory 3 For Windows
http://tinyurl.com/4f869
And MS Movie Maker (included with
Windows XP) can be fun to experiment
with also. It can be used with video clips
and images. Music and narration can
be added also.
Thanks again...

OK John ....I uploaded my reunion video from 1957--60 to Google Video.
You will need a HIGH speed internet connection to view and a lot of time to
view because the time to "buffer" I suggest you wait after bringing up the
page and start the video over after five minutes or so to view without the
jerky motion. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4301781669575046358
It's about 15 minutes long. If you like it, I will upload the Proshow
with still photos.......June

Download the Google player and it will tell you how long it takes to view
without interruption. Looks like you could go eat lunch while waiting.
Oh well it's free and it's new. Hopefully Google will get it fine tuned
soon....June

Very interesting, I love the old movies. I especially
enjoyed the music. The late 50s...what a time...
things have really changed...haven't they?
Forgive me for being a pain...but I would prefer
however that you upload to one of the sites I posted
so I could easily download the file to my hard drive
and view from there.
Thank you for sharing.

I thought about using ftp sites for the file but I don't have time to set it
up right now. I did get a month's worth of YouSendIt so I can send up to 2
gig. That leaves the problem of I don't have a legitimate e-mail address
for you. The 50's video is 525mb to download. Just so you know. Use
Ljbart@hotmail.com to send me your e-mail address. The video with several
years of photos (no video) is over 700mb. I did photoshop just about all
the old photos for clarity and repair. BTW the first photo was taken back
in 1869. In some photos I removed former spouses no longer in the family
and the beauty of Photoshop is that you can't tell. LOL I do have a video
(Proshow DVD) of my grandson that I made recently for his doctor to share
with other families that have a child born with his birth defect. I wanted
them to see that their child can have a normal life because we didn't know
that when he was born. It has both photos and mpegs intergrated in one
short movie. (12 min). He was born after Grandma had a digital camera so it
was really easy to make. He's 5 1/2 years old now. I'll put these videos
on my desktop to upload. A wireless laptop just isn't fast enough....June

What a beautiful post, June. I can relate. Recently I began organizing a
sort of geneology folder myself, and among the things I discovered was a
very old picture of my mother as a little girl of maybe 6 or so, sitting at
the table with her mom and her grandmother and several other relatives I
never knew. Seeing that sweet little girl face looking up with such hope,
her whole life yet ahead of her, made it all the more poignant that she is
gone since 2000 at the age of 84.
I attended a funeral a couple of years ago and there was a very wise Rabbi
who spoke there, as it was a Jewish funeral. He said that if we didn't
have death we also would not have new life, no babies and small children
coming into our lives. Lots of food for thought in that statement. One
generation passes and the new one is born......

Yes , these things remind us of our own mortality. The hope of our
children and grandchildren gives us peace. Thanks for the kind words,
Evelyn. Means a lot coming from an insightful poster like you.....June

Sweet! Besides creating a DVD slideshow for treasuring precious
memories, i also make show-n-tell cool flash photo gallries on the web
for fun sharing. Here i can't foget my favorite friend - Wondershare
Flash Slideshow Builder. I believe you will love it too.

I wanted to do the same thing for my parents, especially my father. I don't
live close but had requested several times over the past 3 years that they
send me some of the many 8MM movies my father shot in the 50s and 60s so I
could convert them to DVD. There was always an odd variety of answers why
these films couldn't be found or sent. When I went back home in August to
visit I realized why the films couldn't be found. My mother now also has
dementia (although still somewhat functional when compared to my father) and
the entire garage is full of everything possible that could be hoarded. She
probably wouldn't know where to look or be able to tell anyone else where to
look for anything in this huge mess of a fire hazard. The next time I can
look for these films is after their deaths when I come to clean the house
out and then it will be too late. So sad. AW

This disease robs us all of so much. Maybe the films will survive.
There's always hope....June

Yes it is, August.
But hopefully when all is said and done you can preserve those old films
afterwards.

June,
Your post touched me - how our loved ones change and leave us over time. I
wish that I had a record of my family, especially my Mom who died 18 months
ago. Alas, my family long ago got out of the habit of making home movies or
even taking still pictures. I'd almost kill to have audio recordings of my
Mom and grandparents as I think that sound can be more powerful than images.
Most images I have now are only in memory. I envy you for your efforts.

I am lucky...this same cousin took VHS movies with sound for several years
from 1989 to 1996 at our reunions. I have all of it on DVD now. Mom's in
there too ..........June
