My sister saw our Mom today at the mental hospital.  Mom was having a
brain CAT scan, and she's always been claustrophobic.  Kim had told them
they'd either have to drug her into oblivion, or have someone *very*
reassuring there.  They did have Mom on anxiolytics to the point where
she was shuffling, but she knew Kim (and two days ago she told the
director of Collwood Terrace her whole family was dead except her mother
-- who's been dead since '63) She spoke well of my BIL, who she
suspected of homocidal designs a week ago.  She remembers her grandkids.

Apparently yesterday she was very angry, but today she was calm, and has
made a couple of friends.  She has a private room.

The best news is that they suspect Mom's sudden sharp plunge into
psychosis may be the result of a bladder infection.  If that's the case,
then there's a good chance that a couple of weeks of antibiotics will
put her back where she was at the beginning of July -- demented, but not
psychotic.  A consequence devoutly to be wished.

If Mom goes back to that place, she can go back to Collwood Terrace, and
even go on the occasional outing with my sister and dad.

We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Dana, it will be wonderful if curing a bladder infection will make a big
change in your mom's circumstances.  We'll keep our fingers crossed, and add
a prayer for that to be the case.

UTIs can be very tricky little devils; often, there are no overt
symptoms. A useful factoid for filing: sudden decline in behavior,
look for an infection, esp. of the UT variety.

Glad things seem to be looking up.

Yes, definitely.

But also don't forget that often elderly folks don't to drink enough liquids
to keep from getting these kinds of things.   I had an awful time getting my
MIL to drink water.  Soda, coffee with lots of sugar and milk, that sort of
thing OK, but water never!    Sometimes I have to remind myself to get
enough liquids also!   My MIL would say she wasn't thirsty, but if you wait
till you are actually feeling thirst, it is probably too late.     We get
the big bottles delivered to the house, and it is really one little luxury
we love.

Yep, Dana, water intake, in particular, is very important, exactly as
Evelyn says. Use, or advocate, whatever tricks you can to achieve
increased water intake, but *do not* beat yourself up if you're unable to
convince your LO to do what you think is best.

It sounds a bit sinister and underhanded, perhaps, but it's in the best
interest of your mother and all of your family. That's what we all
(sincere posters) want, in the long run.

Dana, this sounds like it could be great news, assuming the bladder
infection really did worsen her condition!  I hope she improves to the
point she was at before the drop.

Good luck!
