I just spoke with the director of the facility Mom is in in San Diego.
She said that had they realized that Mom's Alzheimer's was as advanced
as it is, and that Mom was delusional, they wouldn't have taken her.
They're going to give it a week-10 days to see if they can get Mom
stabilized with Xyprexa, but if that doesn't work, we have to move her.
So in interests of being proactive, can any of you give me referrals for
a Special Care Unit in San Diego that is equipped for late-stage
Alzheimer's patients who are physically *very* healthy and active, but
also delusional and paranoid? There's a good facility here in my
hometown in Indiana, but moving Mom 2000 miles would involve *MAJOR*
sedation. Better to put her somewhere nearby.
Thanks.

Dana... I can't give you any referrals on places for Alzheimers
patients in San Diego, but I can tell you that Eli Lilly's Xyprexa was
a big help when my late Mother was suffering paranoid delusions. Her
problems were probably the result of mini-strokes. After being on
Xyprexe and another medication to get her under control, they tried her
on two other medications - one a well known Alzheimers medication and
the other a well known medication for schizoprenia (sp?).
It got so bad I was about to throw in the towel and give up. Then, in
a last ditch effort, I called her geriatric psychiatrist and asked him
if I could at least TRY the two medications she had been on at the
start and he had me ONLY put her on Xyprexe.
Within hours, we were chitchatting again and I was able to take her out
- no lie.
I know there have been some "warnings" about Xyprexa and I won't
dispute them because I'm not qualified. I will say I truly believe
that Xyprexe gave us some extra QUALITY time with my Mother. There are
no guarantees, but I hope you and your Mother have as good a luck with
it as we did.

UCSD has a huge Alzheimer's research program -- why not call them and ask
for some referrals -- they probably know all the local resources.

I agree, but I also think that in the meanwhile we need to be thinking
about what we're going to do if Mom needs to be moved. Part of the
problem right now is that we waited too long, and had to make a choice
in too much of a hurry.
